Xmas pressies

I’m a nanna and wondered how to spread gift giving to large family in xmas day without overloading the kids with vast amounts of pressies all in one go. Any ideas?

subscription to magazines or comics, tickets for something....

Buy less and better quality. So don't buy 10 gifts at the poundshop for someone, but spend the £10 on a better item.

Book Tokens would be perfect.

We split our presents:

  • presents from Father Christmas and parents are delivered in sacks to children's beds overnight and opened early morning
  • presents from anyone else and for adults go under the tree and are opened after lunch. The children take turns to hand the presents out.

Spreads it out across the day Smile We're not talking 100s of presents here, btw!

If your Grandchildren get more presents than they know what to do with, how about buying them one small, quality item or books and then buying them premium bonds or just giving their parents cash for their savings accounts?

Then when they're older, they'll have a nest egg instead of a childhood of toys that they barely played with.

Mil just buys experience type gifts or subscriptions. (an excellent plan to get everything online) she hands them out in envelopes at the dinner table.

In our family we have all presents in a pillowcase from everyone and dip in at regular intervals throughout the day, to keep the excitement going.

But if you're a 'nanna' rather than the parents, is it strictly up to you? Don't give the kids tonnes of stuff, just a few nice things, and don't try to outdo the parents...

@Zaphodsotherhead has it spot on.

Don't clutter up their houses with big/noisy stuff. Ask them what the children would like.

Thanks for all your replies. First time I’ve been on mum’s net and it’s great to think people take time to reply with good ideas and advice.

Maybe just don't buy vast amounts of presents in the first place. Am I missing something?

We limit everyone to giving one present because anything else is overwhelming and most of them get ignored.
