£89 sold on eBay and £35 fees. Sound right?

I have been having a clear out ready to downsize, and currently have 72 listings on eBay. Most of these are for books with a starting price of 99p, but there are also a few unwanted presents etc.

I have so far sold 6 items, totalling £89 excluding postage. However, my monthly invoice has arrived with a bill of £35! Does that seem right? I had no idea it would cost so much, and most listings had a starting price of 99p - although I did add Buy it Now to some. I can't anywhere find an exact breakdown of how that is made up, but does that seem right? I have PayPal fees on top, of course.

Ugh.

The fees should be 10% of the sale price including postage, so unless your postage was very expensive, that's not right.

Did you have chargeable premium add ons to the listing? You should have an invoice in your account, that breaks down the fees.

Probably too late now, but they do regular offers over the weekends for £1 seller fees, so worth doing if an item is likely to sell for more than £10, but it's account specific and you have to opt in. I get the offer a couple of times a month.

eBay fees are astronomical. I stopped selling on there years ago.

I remember like you, selling a load of stuff which totalled around £110 in sales. My final fee was £45 odd!

They charge all sorts of additional fees for random things e.g. if you set an auction to end at a specific time (lots of people opt for Sunday evenings).

That’s daylight robbery! Can’t be right. Should be 10% I believe so £8.90

I'm in the same boat. Once you add on the PayPal see, postage packaging, going to the post office, its hardly worth it. Next time I'm just gonna chuck it all in the bin.

They charge you the fee on your postage too.

It's years since I sold on eBay, but I think in the current format, you only get some many free listings a month and after that you pay listing + final value fees. You can see a break down on your account. But not on the app/mobile site

DontCallMeShitley · 06/11/2019 01:43

Did you use extra features, some categories charge for extra pictures, if you use both auction style and BIN together etc.

Check your account and see what you have been charged for, it will be listed in there.

If you still have listings running then check them all and remove anything you are being charged extra for.

When you get to the end of a listing, before confirming the listing it tells you the fee which enables you to go back and remove anything you don't want to pay for.

Don't forget postage is also included in the total fee. You also pay PayPal fees.

safariboot · 06/11/2019 01:49

What was your total including postage? As mentioned eBay fees are on price including postage nowadays. EBay did this to put a stop to sellers inflating postage costs to dodge fees.

It does mean that an item that sells for 99p ends up making you very little money, or in extreme cases could even lose you money. As I learnt from sending them as Christmas gifts, books can be bloody expensive to post.

oxcat1 · 06/11/2019 17:17

Thanks so Much for answers. The £89 does not include postage costs, but I see now that the £35 does. I have sent most things at £2.79 via Packlink so it would add up.

I can't find the detailed information about what things have cost? It might be because I am on the mobile, but whenever I select 'classic site', it returns to mobile whenever I try and click on or open anything.

Many of my items were indeed listed with a starting price of 99p, and then a buy it now of something like £2,50. I have taken these off but many items are now on their automatic relist so I don't think it will make any difference? I certainly don't understand why i haven't received the initial 1000 free listings as I haven't listed anything for years.

Feeling very disheartened! Was trying to clear out ex-husbands stuff before renting somewhere smaller but it is not going well. Even had to refund £30 of my £89 after a print arrived damaged; I paid for enhanced cover with PackLink and turns out they don't cover 'wall decor'!

I think you get charged extra for adding a Buy It Now price on top of an auction. So it does sound like you've added some optional extras which cost extra. When you list something, it should come up with a price at the bottom of the page before you submit it. But the app misses out all sorts of stuff - I always recommend that everyone uses a desktop computer and uses the advanced listing tool.
