Child Benefit Tax

Anyone had experience with high income tax charge? We have been put in debt by incorrect info by tax office, my partner has a disability that prevents him looking after our LO so we pay high childcare with no help and now lost our child benefit? Can I challenge as tax office error? Unfair law?

My partner pays maintenance (rightly so) but they do not consider our high childcare costs? Anyone had experience on applying for a variation until childcare is more manageable? We both work full time just a struggle

What was the tax office error? Not sure if there's anything they could have done that would have change your position in relation to the HICBC.

The charge is calculated with reference to your level of income and unfortunately deductions such as childcare costs don't come into it. This page might help www.gov.uk/child-benefit-tax-calculator/main

You can still claim child benefit and then depending on the level of income some or all of it may have to be paid back. Between £50 and £60k a proportion is paid back and once you reach £60k it all needs paying back. Alternatively, you register for child benefit and then opt out of getting the money.

What wrong info were you given?

Basically didn't tell me my company car p11D value goes into the calculation, the tax office have given me compensation but they put me in debt due to error
The other thing is that the law itself is so unfair, a couple earning more than us keep their whole child benefit, I really want the law reviewing it should be fair to working class

How much do you earn? What's the P11D got to do with child benefit?

The reduction of child benefit between £50k and £60k is on the 'adjusted net income' not base salary. You adjusted net income can go up and down dependent on pension contributions and benefits like company cars.
