Have you had more than one instrumental delivery?

I’m 26 weeks pregnant and starting to get worried about giving birth. My first ended in failed ventuouse and a dreadful forceps delivery.

I vowed at the time that if I were to have another baby I would opt for a c-section as I absolutely did not want to risk a forceps delivery again, but now since becoming pregnant I think I might like to try for a VB.

I just wondered how many of you have had more than one instrumental delivery? I don’t know what the chances are of having a second and still not 100% sure I want to risk it!

First was ventouse second forceps x

I was the same, first ventouse, second forceps. Injury and recovery different each time.

Took me longer to heal from forceps but now I am healed (after about 6 months) I’m in better shape than I was after the first time!!

Happyspud · 05/11/2019 19:11

First was failed ventouse followed by horrific forceps, episiotomy and multiple infections in the wound including MRSA.

2nd, 3rd and 4th all popped out no bother on gas and air!

First was ventouse and then the second was failed ventouse then forceps.

Recovery was the same with no stitches with either.

Thanks for sharing, I should also ask had you considered a c-section after your first instrumental? Why did you end up needing another or was it just bad luck?

My baby was back to back and got stuck which was the reason I needed it the first time. The optimist in me thinks maybe this time the baby will be in a better position so I can avoid it next time.

Does anyone regret not requesting a section? I still have some after effects with scar tissue but nothing as bad as other stories I have read, I’m just so worried that further damage could be caused if I have to have it again.

First was horrendous forceps delivery which led to massive pph. I was insistent I would never consent to another forceps delivery unless the baby’s life was in danger and would have requested a csection instead. Ds2 arrived very quickly and without any interventions. I hope your next one is a lot more straightforward.

My first I had an episiotomy and forceps delivery. Have to say I was traumatised after the labour and birth and it took me years until it didn't upset me any more.
Had my second this year (6 years later). I was dreading the labour but didn't want to face the recovery from having a section. Baby was almost 11 pounds, small tear and ventouse delivery but the labour, birth and recovery were much easier this time. I would absolutely not be worried about labour again.

georgiams · 05/11/2019 20:58

My first with ventouse was back to back but the midwifes didn't realise I had a 2nd degree tear and when pregnant for the second time was worried about another instrumental I was told by the consultant it was unlikely to happen again and second babies pop out. I was induced had another back to back baby but this time with a massive head! Third degree tear 5 months ago and still not recovered really regret not having a c section and would never give birth naturally again but I've probably just had really bad luck ! Xxx

@yadayadayesokay I didn’t think of a cs for my second from what I recall. I think I did have some faith that it would go better and faster as my body had done it before so had muscle memory etc. I know I did feel I needed to ‘do it better’ so maybe that’s why I didn’t consider a cs. I’ve also always thought that since my vagina is mangled I can live with a mangled tummy too.

For the record my #3 was b2b and yes, a tougher birth but I still did it on gas and air and in the water. I think your issue was that your first was your body and minds first, not that they were b2b.

randomsabreuse · 05/11/2019 21:09

First was ventouse/tear needing stitches.

2nd much bigger baby (8lb vs 6lb) was also ventouse but much easier and epesiotomy which has healed much better.

Happyspud · 05/11/2019 21:10

Oh my first with forceps was 7lb and 2nd that flew out no bother in the water was 9lb2!

Maybe there’s just no rhyme or reason!

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 05/11/2019 21:11

I had forceps and episiotomy. Fine until secondary infection. Then was fine with antibiotics.

I though this was about 2 musical instruments in one day. I'm an idiot 😳

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 05/11/2019 21:13

Sorry and mine was twins one after the other, so probably irrelevant.

Ignore, sorry op

foxatthewindow · 05/11/2019 21:16

I had one truly horrific forceps delivery, and I was quite anxious during my second pregnancy. Delivery was so different, I delivered in the pool on the midwife led unit and it was so easy compared to the first ordeal. I went home after 6 hours and slept in my own bed!

DramaAlpaca · 05/11/2019 21:20

I had a forceps delivery with DC1, but didn't need any intervention with DC2 or DC3.

BakewellGin1 · 05/11/2019 21:20

Oldest DS was forceps delivery with no stitches needed but damage done to pelvis and pelvic muscles that was never treated or addressed following birth. It was awful but convinced myself it would be fine 2nd time.

Second DS was three failed vontousse efforts and two failed forceps efforts before a successful third attempt, however resulted in episiotomy, third degree tear to anal area and unrepairable damage. Debrief from consultant resulted in me being told I wouldnt be able to successfully carry full term or deliver naturally if I had another (I won't be) and therefore would be a planned section.

Everyone is different but part of me wishes I had a section this time as recovery is long and ongoing.

StrawberryGoo · 05/11/2019 21:21

I’m debating whether or not to ask for a section after a horrible forceps delivery for my first, which I haven’t recovered from so I’m interested in the answers here.

guest2013 · 05/11/2019 21:22

I had three kiwi ventouse deliveries. The final two I didn't even have stitches for Blush All were preferable to a c-section from my perspective. I have a weird birth canal and couldn't push the babies round the u-bend.

StrawberryGoo · 05/11/2019 21:26

Did anyone who had pelvic floor damage after the first find that the second delivery worsened it?

Itshouldneverhavehappened · 05/11/2019 21:30

My first delivery was an epidural followed by episiotomy followed by forceps.
I swore my second delivery would be different and I thought maybe I’d been a bit pathetic (and soft) the first time around. But, circumstances took over. At 36 weeks, my baby had stopped growing and there were other concerns, so I was induced, followed by epidural, episiotomy and forceps again.
However, with both deliveries, there were no problems during or afterward and I was back to running around as normal pretty much immediately.
