Out of control appetite! Is it thyroid related?

I posted recently about getting privately tested for thyroid problems. Haven't pursued that yet but definitely will. My thoughts were that I would have underactive thyroid rather than overactive because one of the main symptoms of overactive was weight loss and that DEFINITELY isn't happening!

I'm now wondering if my lack of weight loss is because of my OUT OF CONTROL appetite. Constantly bloody hungry! Obviously, this may be due to other factors, but having just read that an overactive thyroid can also cause hunger, I'm now wondering.

Has anyone else experienced this crazy appetite if they have thyroid problems?

I did, but it was due to a Heliobacter Pylori which is a common gut infection, it feels a bit like hunger pains so you eat to hopefully settle it, if that makes sense.

I think thyroid can do this too & I'm sure there's other thing, see your GP fir tests

That's interesting, RockinHippy, and something I've never thought of. Will be mentioning this to the doctor at some point. I can't go on like this, I'll be gaining stones....

What treatment did you get for the H. Pylori infection, if you don't mine me asking? And did you notice a distinct lessening of appetite?

H.Pylori needs double antibiotics & PPI therapy to clear it, sometimes more than once. If you haven't been tested for it before, then I believe the blood test is the most accurate test but only suitable if it's your first time

Hyperthyroid = eating loads but still losing weight.
Hypothyroid = gaining weight even if not eating much. Appetite is typically small.

By all means request testing, but prepare yourself for there not being a simple hormonal explanation. Appetite and weight are controlled by very complex interactions of genetics, hormones, gut flora and psychology. It's possible that thyroid hormones are part of the explanation in your case, but they are unlikely to be the whole story.
