DD's period every 2 weeks! This isn't right is it?

Hi,

So my DD is almost 13 and started her period last spring. The first couple were all over the place, which I was expecting, but now seemed to have settled into an every 2 week pattern and I'm a bit concerned.

She doesn't say she feels poorly, but I would think she would be lacking in iron.

How common is this?

Thanks

Google hyperovulation. I’ve got it and also have a period every 14-16 days. It’s miserable. Basically you release an egg from each side.
(It’s how I ended up having fraternal twins!) 🤪

ShippingNews · 04/11/2019 07:54

It would take a long time before she would be lacking in iron. You only get anaemic if you have torrential periods over a long time. I'd see the GP about the frequency of them though - if nothing else it will be very annoying for her to be bleeding for 50% of her life.

CointreauHotChocolate · 04/11/2019 08:05

@doodlejump1980, that does sound rubbish. Did you always have this?

@ShippingNews, yes, I'm going to make an appointment. I've been holding off to see if things settled down, but as I say, this does now seem to be the pattern.

It’s quite normal and they can take a few years to settle down. Mine used to be the opposite with up to 50!days in between but when they came I had awful cramp that floored me and would last 11-14 days, now my cycle is 28-35 days and lasts 4 days so they can and do change. If you are concerned take her to the gp.

CointreauHotChocolate · 04/11/2019 09:07

@Likethebattle, I really hope so. I remember mine being really far apart when I first started too. Maybe 40-50 days. Think I always assumed it would be that way round for DD too.

We mentioned this to the GP about dd12 but he said it's normal til they settle down.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/11/2019 10:25

I started my periods at 9, had very frequent heavy periods (every 2-3 weeks) for a year but then nothing until I was 10. This type of irregulatarity is normal in the early days. But my irregular periods continued from age 10 too which my consultant now says was a sign I should have been investigated for pcos

doodlejump1980 · 04/11/2019 10:48

@CointreauHotChocolate yup. I had such a bad time when I was a teen, no-one (especially horrible pe teachers) believed that I was having another period. You sound like a lovely supportive Mum though. Even going on the pill didn’t do anything as when I came off it, they were as bad as ever. Might be worth a wee trip to the gp?

CointreauHotChocolate · 04/11/2019 11:00

@doodlejump1980, funny you should mention P.E teachers. I actually had to send a note in today to ask that she sit todays lesson out. She had her first accident yesterday and was particularly paranoid that it would happen at school and not so great when you're in little shorts and around all your friends Blush Hopefully they'll be sympathetic, but tbh if they're not, they'll have me to deal with Grin

Dreading taking her to the GP though. She absolutely hates going and gets incredibly nervous.

My daughter didn't start her periods until she was 14.
In the first year, she had just two periods and then the floodgates opened (so to speak) and she was having horrific periods every two weeks.
Luckily we had a really sympathetic doctor who referred her for an abdominal scan and they diagnosed her with PCOS. She's now on the pill which is regulating them but unfortunately not making them any less heavy.
Go and see the GP, OP. It must be awful for her having to put up with them every two weeks.

savingshoes · 04/11/2019 11:24

Why don't you contact your local school nursing team?

CointreauHotChocolate · 04/11/2019 13:33

@Speekachu, your poor DD. Has she considered the mirena?

Yes, I do feel sorry for her. She was so nervous about starting them too and I obviously tried to reassure her Confused Bet she won't trust another word I say!

I'm obviously hoping that this is just a blip.

@savingshoes, I hadn't thought about that. What could they do that the GP can't though? Or are you suggesting that because I said she was nervous about seeing our GP?

I had this. I went on the pill when I was 13, it helped but effected my mood.

CointreauHotChocolate · 04/11/2019 14:59

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou, oh god, really? Confused My DD's mood already....fluctuates shall we say. Love the name btw Grin

Dd was 10, nearly 11 when she started and they were every 2-3 weeks. They're gradually spacing out and she's around 25 or 26 days between periods 18 months later. Interestingly, she ovulates on day 14 and this is fixed, but time between ov and period is lengthening. Makes sense I suppose as even with periods at 10, she wouldn't have been fertile.

I'd perhaps see somebody but it doesn't sound too dissimilar to our earlier experience.

BlackeyedSusan · 04/11/2019 17:19

Apparently normal when they start.
