Does quorn taste as rank as it looks?

Making an effort to try and cut down on my meat consumption so I've bought quorn mince to make bolognese with tomorrow. Never tried it before in my life but it looks horrible. DM who is vegetarian swears blind that I won't be able to tell that it's not beef mince. Is she having me on?

Apart from the slightly squidgier texture, no you can’t tell imo. We had the Linda McCartney meatballs tonight and DDAs forgot they weren’t meat! (We haven’t eaten meat at home for a year!)

Some quorn products are amazing eg the chicken nuggets and the sausages but personally I really don’t like the ham and bacon. Linda McCartney’s products are excellent though, the pulled chicken is fantastic.

*DS not ddas...

Bunnybigears · 03/11/2019 20:38

The texture is different and it gives me the shits.

It's commonly known as Quorn shite in our house. Hate it.

thedevilwithbarty · 03/11/2019 20:39

Of course you can tell it's not meat. It's nothing like meat. It's relatively inoffensive in texture and tastes of nothing, so it's more of a place-holder for meat than anything else.

pumpkinpie01 · 03/11/2019 20:39

I'm the only vegetarian in the house but I always make spaghetti Bol with quorn and no complaints here.

RebornFlame · 03/11/2019 20:41

Quorn mince is delicious with a sweetness to it. Quorn Ham is thin sliced off the devils own arse.

Symptomless · 03/11/2019 20:41

Quorn tastes awful but maybe you can get used to it.

KatefromMergers · 03/11/2019 20:41

The Quorn-haterz klaxon has gone off, I see! It's delicious and an excellent source of protein

NannyR · 03/11/2019 20:41

It tastes ok, but my favourite way to make a bolognese type sauce with no meat is to use a sachet of pre-cooked green lentils.

Oblomov19 · 03/11/2019 20:41

I find it vile. I've tried lots over the years. All rank.

Slappadabass · 03/11/2019 20:41

I like it, it can be mushy so don't simmer for as long as you might with normal meat.
I love the nuggets, the escalopes and lattices are lovely, sausages are rank imo, we get Linda McCartney instead.

Justapatchofgrass · 03/11/2019 20:42

Never go to the factory and see it being made. NEVER

MrsGarethSouthgate · 03/11/2019 20:43

I really like quorn, and some products I agree that you can't tell the difference, such as the hotdogs, meatballs and nuggets. But mince is not one of them.

Don't get me wrong, I like the quorn mince as well (think the only quorn product I didn't like was the now-extinct lamb grills), but I'd be surprised if anyone believed it to be meat. Personally I don't think that's a bad thing though.

gamerchick · 03/11/2019 20:43

It didnt taste bad. The texture is different and it gave me a bad belly and the raging shits.

Apparently if you persevere your body gets used to it and eventually it won't cause the raging shits and stomach cramps.

God luck.

GeoffreyAndBungle · 03/11/2019 20:43

I don't like the texture or taste and it gives me stomach ache and wind Blush

AudTheDeepMinded · 03/11/2019 20:44

It's ok, once it's in a tomatoey garlicky sauce it Is perfectly acceptable in spaghetti. The bacon and ham are not great. Sausages and chicken pices alright. But they are not meat so don't be disappointed that they taste different with different texture.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/11/2019 20:46

Some very differing views here! I'll give it a go and hope for the best. The packaging said recommended by Netmums so that was also a bit off putting. Grin

Some people do have a recognised allergy to it, but by no means will the vast majority suffer any ill effects.
And I'd rather go to a factory and see Quorn made than a slaughter house and butchers to see how mince comes into being.

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/11/2019 20:49

Yes.

Nat6999 · 03/11/2019 20:49

If you use the mince & put in lots of meat taste through stock cubes, it isn't that bad in things like chilli or bolognese. But to me that feels like a waste of time, I would rather use proper mince.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/11/2019 20:51

It tastes a bit nothing-y to me. Takes a lot of seasoning to make a meal flavoursome.
Stop eating with your eyes, as my DM would say.

fruitpastille · 03/11/2019 20:52

DS eats it as he loves animals but does not love vegetables. He looks longingly at our roast chicken when we have it. DD's face is a picture if she gets her brother's dinner by accident!

Schwibble · 03/11/2019 20:53

It tastes ok to me, but makes me extremely ill, especially the bolognese.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/11/2019 20:54

The sausages are delicious, both frozen and cocktail

Quorn mince is find but does not taste of meat
