Out of date but unopened, vac sealed, smoked salmon.

I'm tempted but DH says no way.

Yes or no.

Would you still eat this?

I wouldn't. It's November now

FoldenHoard · 03/11/2019 11:07

No.

MrsBobBlackadder · 03/11/2019 11:08

I'm pretty lax with use by dates, but even I wouldn't eat smoked salmon that is a week out of date...

No. My health is more important than £3.50

NonUrinatInVentum · 03/11/2019 11:10

I would. I've got bacon in the fridge with a 21st Oct best before and it's still perfect.

Open it and smell it, if it's not ok you'll know.

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/11/2019 11:11

Yes if it smelled ok. I’ve eaten smoked salmon more out of date than this, it’s vacuum packed nothing can get in

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/11/2019 11:11

Open it and give it a sniff Grin

MadnessInMethod · 03/11/2019 11:11

Gah, binned it. I hate throwing food away.

DartmoorChef · 03/11/2019 11:12

I would at home. That salmon will have been vacuum sealed months ago. It wont go off in a few days if its not been opened.

Sparklfairy · 03/11/2019 11:14

I hate throwing food away too and have been pretty disgusting with my lax attitude to use by dates but fish a week out of date would be a definite hell no.

NonUrinatInVentum bacon (and eggs as it goes) lasts forever so I don't even look at dates.

MadnessInMethod · 03/11/2019 11:14

I'm pretty lax with use by dates, I probably would have eaten it but I'm cooking roast dinner for 14 people today and I can't risk having the shits Grin

OP posts:
NonUrinatInVentum · 03/11/2019 11:16

Take it out of the bin and SMELL it!! Grin

Sparklfairy · 03/11/2019 11:17

MadnessInMethod very wise! But worrying you've made me realise my decision making process as to whether to eat something risky... 'Do I have anywhere to be/important things to do in the next day or two?' ShockEnvy

I need to rethink my life choices Grin

Kaddm · 03/11/2019 11:17

NO!
It's a use by, not a best before

Limer · 03/11/2019 11:17

Yes! It's preserved and vacuum sealed. Get it out of the bin.

MidnightMystery · 03/11/2019 11:44

Yes l

SunshineAngel · 03/11/2019 12:15

I wouldn't, because it's a use by. But it does actually annoy me, because my partner will eat things way past so long as they look and smell okay, and he's always been fine. I think manufacturers are way too cautious with their dates, which has the effect of a lot of food being wasted.

Best Befores on the likes of tins are even worse. Chances are you could eat a tin of something in 10 years and it'd be absolutely fine, despite it being 8 years out of date. It's just stupid and misleading much of the time.

WeShouldOpenABar · 03/11/2019 14:15

I would it's preserved and vacuum packed

FelicityBeedle · 03/11/2019 14:19

Smoked salmon has a shelf life of several months, a week wouldn’t have made a difference

CakeNinja · 03/11/2019 14:21

Smoked salmon is (I’m fairly sure) packaged for ages before it goes off.
I’d have opened it and given it a sniff at the very least before chucking it.
