My huge belly

morriseysquif · 02/11/2019 23:53

Over the last year, I seem to have developed a huge belly. I've always had a bit of one since the DC but I've been through the menopause and this seem to be the classic hormonal shift of fat to my gut. I cycle half an hour every day and run (though it has been hard to fit this in lately). I'm not on HRT.

I've tried to diet but can't seem to shift it on the usual 1200 calories diet a day which in the past has done the trick. I can't imaging eating any less than that without keeling over Confused I have an active job which keeps me on my feet.

Any tips to lose this giant squishy?

Have you spoken to your GP about it? As you say it probably is due to changes that come with the menopause but it would be sensible to rule out other possible causes if it's something new.

morriseysquif · 03/11/2019 00:09

Yes, she said it was due to hormones, nothing sinister going on, it has been gradual over the last year and I see so many women my age with similar body shapes, it is depressing! Eat healthily and exercise is the advice but it ain't shifting.

Yes, I'm sure it is depressing especially since you are exercising etc. I hope someone will have some good suggestions for you.

I’m the same. Huge stomach. I’ve been asked when baby is due. Awful. I exercise but I also overeat. I’ve given up on myself.

BetterEatCheese · 03/11/2019 00:40

It may

BetterEatCheese · 03/11/2019 00:41

It may be the composition of your diet rather than calories. Have you heard of the Blood sugar diet? It got rid of my large belly very quickly. Michael Moseley makes a very good case for trying it

Tummy tuck?

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 03/11/2019 07:54

Tummy tuck is massively invasive surgery 😱

jackstini · 03/11/2019 08:00

Watching as I feel your pain OP

On holiday at the moment so hating seeing my belly in a bikini and a lady the other day told daughter standing in front of me 'not too close, careful of the baby'
I was gutted. Nearly 11 years since my last pregnancy
Sad

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/11/2019 09:03

Core exercise? Strengthening your core would help to tone up.

Heismyopendoor · 03/11/2019 09:05

single a tummy tuck is to get rid of loose excess skin. That doesn’t sound like what the op needs.

FarmerFrump · 03/11/2019 09:07

I had a similar problem and being in my late forties couldn't shift it. I joined a small program about a year ago - not cheap, but utterly worth it. It's all nutrition and eating well, and I lost two dress sizes and have kept it all off. It's changed the way I eat and exercise for good.

ChipInTheSugar · 03/11/2019 09:10

I was like this - had all the investigations etc - nothing, and I'd kind of accepted this was the way it had to be at my age, on HRT, etc

I've now been doing Michael Mosley Fast800 for 10 weeks and it's definitely going. I've gone down from a Large size belt (went down four holes to the tightest) and am now on the third hole on a Medium size belt. Lost 10kg so far.

A combination of the right fats/proteins on this way of eating means you're not ravenous like you'd expect to be.

MustardScreams · 03/11/2019 09:13

Have you had investigations (scans, blood tests etc) or has the dr just said it’s hormones?

Dowser · 03/11/2019 09:15

What’s your elimination like.
Since I’ve focussed on eliminating constipation my tum has gone down considerably
I also have gone gf and df and I don’t eat gf breads , biscuits or cakes so the inflammation in the system has also helped it reduce

Plenty of water is important. We tend to cling onto fluid if we don’t drink enough water.

It’s not perfect but better.

At my age I’d rather have a bit of a tum than a very wrinkly face.

BalloonSlayer · 03/11/2019 09:18

I joined BIWI's low carb boot camp in January. It has been slow for me as I keep cheating (shhhhh, don't tell BIWI, the stick!, the stick!!) but I lost 22lb and 7" from round my waist.

Ohyesiam · 03/11/2019 09:18

At53 My midriff is better than it’s been for 15 years due to

  1. Blood Sugar Diet
You lose specifically from your middle. AKA fast 800 diet
  1. Core exercise, specifically TRX which is a class at local authority gym.

I’ve always been Apple shaped, and has developed a huge nasty distended squishy belly , I look sooooo much better now.

adaline · 03/11/2019 09:44

Have you been tested for ovarian cancer?

Filopastryface · 03/11/2019 09:47

I wouldn't be taking your doctors word for that unless they've actually done tests to investigate properly. Better safe than sorry.

RhinoskinhaveI · 03/11/2019 09:49

My suggestion is to add in some the strength training and also do more cardio

Everydaylife · 03/11/2019 09:49

I am in my 50s and still slim but I have definitely started to put weight on on my belly which I have never done before. Weight distribution is different as you get older. I still weigh the same on the scales.

Caramelblonde · 03/11/2019 19:23

This could have been written by me!But this week I have lost 1/2 a stone by not eating any bread .It makes me so bloated and sluggish.Feeling lighter today and still have 2 stone to go but now feels doable.
