What’s the best way to get rid of mice? Considering using Superproof

Can anyone share their best way to get rid of mice? They’re freaking me out, little bastards.

Am considering using Superproof. Anyone used? Anything else that worked brilliantly?

The mice are making me very anxious!

(Don’t really want to get a cat as we’ve got a dog, and - when I was a kid - all my cats just brought in their own half-dead rodents, which was awful.)

Not a popular choice but I use the snap traps. I bait them with Nutella or peanut butter and always have a dead mouse within 2 hours of putting them down.

These, from Amazon.

We had a mouse (or mice, more likely!) 18 months ago. I was anxious about it so called out a pest control person. He charged £100 for 3 visits, where he looked for access points and sealed them up well. Laid down different types of poison in various places around the house and then came back to check and refill poison etc. It was worth the money for the piece of mind - even though we could have done it ourselves.
We did end up getting a kitten and have had no more mice troubles, but she did bring in baby frogs in the summer so having a cat has its own challenges (she's lovely though!).

Thanks all! I’ll ring pest control. Superproof is really expensive, I think. Would like to try something cheaper first... but the mice are making me quite anxious!!

Have you got a hole under your sink? If so get it covered up with some mesh wire.

Italia2005 · 03/11/2019 10:14

Try your local council first. My council subsidises pest control for domestic premises, although doesn’t widely promote the information. We received a really good service for less than £60 which included 2 follow up visits and lots of advice to monitor and act ourselves if we ever get them back.
However we are rural so are more likely to encounter and attract rodents from the surrounding countryside.
Anyway, it’s worth contacting your council just in case.

I didn’t even think about my local council - I will ring them in the morning.

No peep of them today, but a big squeak tonight! Mouse jumped out of the bottom kitchen cupboard drawer when we opened it (under the sink - where there’s a huge hole that I don’t even know where to begin to fill!).

We’ve moved all the food, so there was nothing there for it. Sort of hoping it was reporting back to the rest of the crew that there’s nothing here!? Not sure it can ever be that easy! Could hear them scratching around in the walls after that. Think it must be a mum and babies in a nest...

It sounds like you've got quite a bit mouse problem there Op (sorry!). Hope the pest control are able to find a quick solution.

Poison. I always keep it down in hidden dark corners.

Two more tiny mice running around this evening and I am officially freaking out!

Even at the point of saying to DH “let’s get a cat”. He says “No way!”

Was a cat really the best way to keep them away? Honestly tempted to drive over to the shelter tomorrow and get one!

Are there any “borrow my cat” apps like the “borrow my dog” ones?!?!?

I found putting snap traps with peanut butter on, inside a Chinese takeaway plastic tub with the lid on and a flap cut out of the end worked best.
The mice couldn't take the bait without setting off the trap and you can bin the whole thing without having to see the result!

Humane traps and methods. They are little sentient beings, just trying to be happy like you or I. I’ve had them to and it’s a pita but doesn’t mean they deserve to die. Weird to me that this will be an unpopular view but there you go. www.peta.org/issues/wildlife/living-harmony-wildlife/house-mice/

My parents had a mice problem a few months back. They bought these plug in things which emit a high pitched noise that we can’t hear but the mice can. It doesn’t harm them but they don’t like it. It worked really well and they had no more problems after that.

Abouttogonuts · 04/11/2019 21:41

I know what you mean, Merename - I don’t really want them to die... just to move from my house! I did hear they hate the scent of cats. But then, I don’t want a cat because I’m not a cat person and they’re killers, which I don’t like... I’m suppose I’m not making sense to myself!

Will the traps not just keep trapping the odd one? Is it even possible to get them all?

Thanks for the tip on the sound thingy - I’m looking on amazon right now!

I have an old (old!) house and get mice every year. I had luck with the plug in scarer (until I got indoor guinea pigs), glue traps, and poison.

Humane trap was a dead loss, caught nothing despite using it for weeks with different bait. Switched to glue and caught an entire family in hours. Miserable for the mice but I needed them out my kitchen asap.

Cat also a dead loss, but the mice now stay high up (run along curtain poles etc)!

Merename · 05/11/2019 13:36

I used this type of trap with success - www.double-glazing-parts-spares.co.uk/Humane-Mouse-Trap-Cage?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoaTdgJfT5QIVxbHtCh0jtw2GEAQYCiABEgKwLPD_BwE, along with reducing access to food, keeping floors and surfaces scrupulously clean, and wire wooling up holes. When you see how small, scared and defenceless they are when you’ve caught one, it’s hard to justify murdering them Sad
