I know this has been done lots, but what is the going rate? At the moment DD only gets £10 a month Blushbut we pay for most things. I know of others who get significantly more but are expected to pay for everything themselves. Please can you share your experiences?

Watching this thread with interest, my 16yo DC gets £40 a month, we pay her phone contract and buy most of her clothes. she spends her allowance on clothes, make up , accessories and usually pays for all her social life, unless it's a big trip like a concert ticket or theme park. She has a school bus pass she can use at weekends so doesn't have to pay for transport. She is looking for a job and has done some leaflet delivering but jobs are hard to come by for 16yo ( year 11) in our university town, there is a lot of competition. Things like Netflix are family expenses.
My 12yo DC gets £10 a month and is putting pressure on me to increase her allowance.

DS is really struggling to find a job - he's applied for loads online and in person - not really sure what is going wrong, we've decided to pay him to do some charity work because we really do not want to give him money for nothing and I think the experience will help him.

It is hard if you live in an area where there aren't many jobs or competition is intense. In our university city there are jobs about but you need to be careful to find a decent one. A few.months ago DD found herself a job in an ice cream parlour. To see if she was good enough she had to work a 4 hour shift for free Shock and she found out from one of the permanent staff that it paid £4.50 an hour and if the shop was quiet you had to take a break until it got busy again WITHOUT GETTING PAID. She did get offered the job but we wouldn't let her take it.

Soon after, she got the supermarket job which pays more than double that rate, provides holiday pay and pension contributions, and gives proper training leading to NVQs.
