Somewhere not too hot Europe for a cheap summer holiday?

We tend to do UK holidays, but could we do a week abroad somewhere not too warm for about £2000? We like lots to go and look at. My dd is 15 and would love to go abroad. I don’t seem to be very good at finding cheap deals though!

We flew to Prague and then got train to Berlin. Fab holiday. DD then flew from Berlin to Spain to stay with friends and her flight was ridiculously cheap ie you can get really cheap flight deals within Europe if you want to do a city in one country followed by coast in another.

If you’re looking for cheap accommodation in Copenhagen, I’ve stayed in the Steel House hostel which was around £100 a night for a 4 bed private room. It’s more like a hotel than hostel and has a pool in the basement. It’s very close to the Tivoli and main shopping area. I think you can do Copenhagen quite cheaply if you eat in casual places.

Steel House Hostl looks great @

Pressed too soon.

@Lorelaithe1st, have you stayed there?

Krakow is lovely and you could take a trip to Auschwitz which is harrowing but incredibly interesting.
Food and drink is insanely cheap too.

I went in the summer and it was about 26 degrees but there was a nice breeze.

Bruges is lovely and you could visit some of the chocolate factories.

Any Scandinavia countries are amazing but expensive.

Another vote for Berlin. Summer is usually warm enough for shorts but not roasting, and there are lots of lakes on the fringes for walking/swimming.

@Disfordarkchocolate yes I stayed there last December with a group of friends. So much cheaper than a hotel, one of the friends has stayed there a few times so recommended it and I’d definitely stay there again. It would be suitable for children too.

Very tempted now @Lorelaithe1st, we need some self-catering facilities as eating out all the time with a food intolerance wears very thin. Our AirBnB was great but my husband loves a pool.

Trip round the Netherlands - can be done on the train easily and they have a great museum pass which gets you in to practically every museum in the country.

Bruges is pretty but about a zillion people know that now and the place is heaving. However you can easily combine it with Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels which all have a lot to do.

Budapest is cheap but will be v hot in the summer as will anywhere in central Europe. Have been to Vienna in September and nearly melted.

Anywhere Scandinavia is expensive.

There are a lot of very beautiful cities and places in Poland. Krakow, Warsaw, Gdansk, Baltic coast etc etc.

In terms of cheap deals - just look where Ryanair/Easyjet fly to, get an AirBnB and go for it. In a city the local transport system will have an app which makes it v easy to get anywhere.

Normandy and Brittany. People think it's dull because it's just across the channel from us, but they are so wonderful for family holidays. Explore walled town of St Malo and go cycling aorund the coast. Find the weird rock faces and animals carved in the cliffs by bored medieval monks. Visit Mont St Michel (my DC adored that) Great campsites, great local delicacies that children actually want to try: galettes (savoury pancakes) sausages, crepes, melted cheese, cider, butter biscuits, salt lamb. There's also the D-day landing beaches with secret dugouts to discover and the D-Day museum and war cemeteries which are amazing if your DC are interested in history at all.
It's laid back, not hot, has great beaches, massive skies. I love it.

Wasn't suggesting DC drink cider btw. Got carried away there!
