If you used to have witchy hair and now you have lovely locks, what did you do?

My hair is shoulder length and still has it's natural colour. It still looks reasonably thick and it's not in bad condition. But it's always been course and if I'm not careful it can make me look a little witchy (I'm late 40s). It's a bit wavy but the waves aren't well defined. I've tried the curly hair girl method which gets recommended here at all but it didn't work for me.

Are there any magic solutions? I'm on a couple of work events next week where I'm going to meet people I haven't seen for ages. I'd love to look more polished and that starts with fab hair!

Thanks x

I too have witchy hair in mid-40s so marking place!

vixb1 · 02/11/2019 07:42

How long did you try the curly girl method for? I think you need to stick with it for quite a while to see results?
For your work events next week could you book into a hair salon for a blow dry? They'll make the best of what you've got and give you an immediate boost, then you can focus on getting it more healthy longer term.

Colour wow stuff tames my course, thick hair nicely. I use dream coat on wet hair and then dry it. If I don’t have time to wash hair I use the one minute transformation cream which is also very good.

I’m sort of almost there with sorting my hair out. Curly girl did nothing for me either.

I make sure I use shampoo with no sulphates and no silicones in my shampoo. I also use Garnier Hair Food smoothed into soaking wet hair and left to dry naturally which has made the biggest difference to my hair. It’s sleek-ish rather than a big back of fuzz.

I then use the GHD Gide heated hairbrush thing to smooth out my hair rather than straighten it. I like my natural wave, but not the frizz! This makes it look polished with body.

*no silicones in my conditioner

Brazilian blow dry? It’s a bit like Hermione’s hair potion from Harry Potter.

You can get it done in the salon (expensive) or buy on Amazon (be sure to do in a well ventilated area, because there are fairly potent fumes, but the result is worth it!)

I’ve got half wavy hair and didn’t get on with curly girl either. Babyliss Big Hair was a game changer for me.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 02/11/2019 07:53

I have thick wiry hair that needs a little care to look half decent. I shampoo the roots and condition the ends, brush it through with soft tangle teezer, this gives me an extra day or two before washing again. I towel dry gently, squeeze the water out. Heat protection spray and then blast with hairdryer for a few minutes and leave to dry naturally. Finish with babyliss big hair and some oil/ serum to smooth.

It seems like a lot of work but I try not to do too much that would rough up the hair cuticle.
I hated my hair for years until I learned to look after it properly.

Thanks for your replies. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't get on with the curly girl method, I thought maybe it was me...

As for a blow-dry, I don't know. Blow dried hair can look too "done" and frumpy, that's one of the reasons I haven't got myself a BBH.

My hair is so so much softer now I've started using a serum. Few drops on wet hair before drying - I've noticed a massive difference and it hangs much better. I'm early forties and shoulder length too.

I probably use a bit more than the bottle says tbf but it's working for me.

Brazilian Keratin home treatment from Amazon.
REVOLUTIONARY.

Straysocks · 02/11/2019 09:59

I don't wash mine too often (once per week max), condition and rinse after shampooing. Rub a bit of condition through and leave it in. It dries naturally with a few squeezes here and there. I spray it first with a homemade conditioner/water in a bottle before brushing each day and then it has a nice soft top layer. Mine hair is also really coarse but really curly bar that blinking top layer. Good luck with it.

GHDs

Gingernaut · 02/11/2019 10:02

Conditioner first.

Leave it like a hair 'masque' and then wash your hair with a half decent shampoo for your 'condition.

I've got dandruff, itchy scalp and eczema.

Light conditioner or 'leave-in' spritz afterwards.

I also don't have a hairdryer and keep my hair pretty short.

Herewego93 · 02/11/2019 10:08

I'm fed up of my hair getting it japenase straightened next weekend. Tried all the serums and conditioners

TowerRingInferno · 02/11/2019 10:14

It has taken me until my late 40s to understand my hair, and I think I do everything wrong in terms of the advice for curly hair. Mine is naturally curly-wavy depending on length, but frizzes like crazy in damp weather.

I wash everyday, sometimes twice. It’s the only way to tame it. I wash twice with shampoo, a very small amount each time. The first time to rinse out yesterday’s products, the second time to clean it. I then use a small amount of conditioner (at the moment a Toni&Guy one). Then I brush it through with a tangle teaser. I can only brush it when wet. I then towel dry it carefully so it stays untangled and finger through it a pea-sized amount of leave-in conditioner. Then I do the same with Moroccanoil curl creme (or Bumble and Bumble, but it’s not as good). When it is almost dry (and if I remember) I put the tiniest amount of the curl creme on the ends too. The. I spritz with a small amount of Moroccanoil shine/finish spray.

TowerRingInferno · 02/11/2019 10:16

I never blow dry mine (maybe once a year if running late for something). Makes it too dry and crispy.

bluebell34567 · 02/11/2019 10:19

dont use hair dryer, only towel dry.

TR888 · 03/11/2019 08:44

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I'll have it cut to start with and then use some of the suggestions in this thread. I might have to go back to using hair straighteners, though, rather than encourage my waves...
