I own a leasehold maisonette, I pay a service charge and ground rent for maintenance of the external areas and grounds along with other residents. I have discovered damp/black mould in one of the bedrooms, near the window. Firstly is this something I can safely treat myself or do I need to get a professional in and would this be something I would pay out for or covered in the service charge?

A couple of friends have had a similar issue and treated it themselves but I am a little concerned as my DD is having health issues that could be related. I have been reading up online and there are products I could use but there are also websites that state you should leave the premises, get in professional and only return when its resolved.

My DD keeps getting sick, hives and aches and pains and more recently black mucas, which has really concerned me. I have told her to go to the GP because its really worrying me that this could be connected and potentially serious. I have asked her to swap rooms with me as my room is OK but she wants to keep her room, and spends a lot of time in it.

So far I have purchased a dehumidifier and some black mould cilit bang.

Anyone else had a similar thing and how did they get rid of it.

I don't know much about mould cleaning or illness borne from mould but within your owned leasehold is most likely your responsibility unless the damp causing it is from an external source e.g. guttering overflowing and running down the walls making them damp. Then it would be the landlord's responsibility (paid for out of the service charge) unless of course your lease states otherwise. Ideally you need to figure out why the mould is occurring.

Good luck sorting it out and I hope your DD is ok.
