Insurance, points on licence...help!

I think I've cocked up.

I've just had an email from my insurance asking for photocopies of my driving licence card. It made me think...shit, did I declare those 3 speeding points? The insurance renewed just after I got them and I cannot remember if I've declared them or not. I certainly intended to (as I would never want to end up in this stress!) but I have a feeling now that I didn't.

What is likely to be the outcome if I haven't?

I'm also shitting it now as my address is different on my licence and insurance policyHaloween Sad Am I going to be in trouble?

Please be gentle, I'm feeling really anxious tonight.

It shouldn't be a big deal. Call your insurance company and tell them that you forgot to notify them of the change of address and points when it renewed. Probably the premium will increase as a result so it may be worth shopping around to see if it's cheaper elsewhere - I do this every year and it serves as a way of checking that everything is up to date.

ActualHornist · 01/11/2019 22:04

The points aren’t on the licence anymore, they will cross-ref with the DVLA for that. Although yes you should have notified them.

Your address being incorrect is a problem and may mean your insurance is invalidated. I’m guessing on that.

StayClassySally · 01/11/2019 22:04

If it's only three points then you may have an increase in premium and it may be backdated you when you got them. If you've had an accident and not declared them you may be up the shitter but a lot still pay out with an adjustment based on it.

I've not heard of a penalty for not declaring points as soon as they've been given when there has been no need for the insurance to pay out.

StayClassySally · 01/11/2019 22:05

Didn't read the last part. You can receive a fine for not having the correct address.

jacquettalux · 01/11/2019 22:16

Thanks everyone for the responses. Feeling a little bit better already Smile

I'll phone as soon as they're open and explain that I forgot to notify them. My worry was that they'd cancel my policy - I paid the full amount up front (for the first time ever) and I'm terrified of losing my money and having to fund another policy Haloween Sad

As for the wrong address on the driving licence, I didn't even realise it was an issue until I googled it. I'm actually moving back to the address stated on the licence in December. Ill inform the insurer that the address is also wrong.

The address may not be a problem, as long as they could still contact you via the old address? Their website says you don’t need to notify a temporary change of address as long as you’re still contactable, I think. Sounds as though it is temporary?

jacquettalux · 03/11/2019 16:24

New issue...I cannot remember the date that I actually got caught speeding. I can't find any paperwork with it on?

Any idea how I can find out? I'm guessing the insurer will want to know this.

Thanks for all of your help everyone!

You can see this online. Google something like share my driving license. It's a dvla website and you need your license. It has a record of points and when you got them.

Useruseruserusee · 03/11/2019 16:40

So I had no idea about declaring points and insurance. I have three points that have expired and will come off my licence within a few months.

Do I need to tell my insurance company?

Useruseruserusee · 03/11/2019 16:41

And what will happen if I do?

desperatehousewife21 · 03/11/2019 16:52

I work in car insurance, please don’t panic this honestly happens all the time. The amount of people who casually throw in ‘oh I actually moved 6 months ago’ and didn’t even think to tell us!
As long as you are honest with them and tell them about the change of address and the points they can recalculate your premium based on when you moved/ got the points. As it has recently renewed they would backdate only as far back as the renewal, they can’t do anything about prior to renewal now.

You can find out your points on the gov.uk website just google online driving licence, you’ll need your licence number, national ins number and postcode (the one on the licence) any convictions will show on there Smile

Kez200 · 03/11/2019 16:54

I tell them everything because, when I made a claim, they went through my declared details as part of the claims process. So, had I not told them, it would have been found out during that claim which would be an awful position to be in.

jacquettalux · 03/11/2019 17:44

@desperatehousewife21 Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. You've made me feel much better. Ringing them first thing tomorrow! I had visions of them cancelling my insurance and me losing all of my money!

OP posts:
jacquettalux · 03/11/2019 17:45

@Kez200 I'll be declaring everything tomorrow! It was a genuine mistake - one I won't make again! Smile

OP posts:
StayClassySally · 04/11/2019 16:39

Have you declared? What have they said?

jacquettalux · 04/11/2019 17:23

I did and it went up by a lot - around £300. So I've got until the end of the week to cancel my policy and find a new one or I have to pay it! Haloween Sad

Not a mistake I'll be making again!!

OP posts:
StayClassySally · 04/11/2019 17:32

Will you get some of what you have already paid back?

All that for three points? That's shocking. I bet you can get it cheaper elsewhere

jacquettalux · 04/11/2019 17:43

I'll get back some of it! Think I would have lost around £150 all together if I leave, then will need to find another quote. Going to get on compare the market tonight!
