Any Drs/nurses around? Is this dangerous?

Last time I saw my GP I mentioned having a pain in my back, not back pain as I can move around perfectly, but actual pain inside my back and sore to press on just under my ribs on right hand side. Dr casually mentions that it's probably the narrowing bile duct that they found on my scan a few months prior when I had been scanned for something else. She said I should have been referred to a surgeon for it and that she would do that for me that day.

I am in varying degrees of discomfort/pain which range from mild annoyance to stabbing pains but the more severe pain doesn't last long enough to do much about.

I've googled a bit but not quite sure if it's something dangerous that I should be chasing up or going back to the GP with or just waiting for an appointment with the surgeon (the GP says the waiting list is long).

I'm just wondering if it's something minor and I should just wait or now that it is becoming sorer more frequently should I be seeing someone?

Not medical, but I would want screening for ovarian cancer.

Go back. The NHS referral and appointment system is so bad you can't assume you are in the system.

Ovarian cancer wouldn’t be my first thought with pain that high. More likely to be gall bladder or liver related I’d have thought.

Gall bladder. Push for a scan.

Probably gall bladder particularly as you mention the bile ducts. Check that your in the system for an appt.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/11/2019 06:39

Its way way too high for ovaries.
The intermittent pain and narrowing bile duct point to gall stones. The gall bladder creates bile that then goes to your stomach to help digest oils and fats. You get pain when a gall stone temporarily blocks the bile duct. You may note a bit of indigestion happening with the pain.

So, yes chase up the referral because they will do a scan of your gall bladder.

It’s not dangerous/life threatening. many people end up with their gall bladder removed completely.

Why ovarian cancer? Unless there are other abdominal gynae or gastro symptoms or a family history the profile is not a fit.

I would make a phone appt with your GP to clarify the status of the referral OP, and ask for pain relief or treatment options if the pain is affecting your activities or sleep as I suspect you will be in for a wait. Unless the GP has flagged it as urgent, which is only likely if you were expressing severe symptoms or pain then it usually takes several weeks to process a referral, on top of whatever the waiting list is.

Definitely chase it up, these things quite often go AWOL.

Gall bladder. Look online there must be info about gallstones. I think you need to avoid fatty food as that encourages the gallbladder to empty ( I think - not a doctor) which could be the pain (if opening is narrow or there are gallstones blocking it).

You can contact your GP surgery and Reception/the secretary can check your referral has been sent and to what department at the hospital, you can then contact that department to see how long the wait is. If you don't think you can wait that long you can go back to ask your GP to expedite your appointment.

Funny that some would mention ovary problems as I'm also on the waiting list for a laparoscopy for lower right abdominal pain too which radiates up as far as under the ribs but I have been told numerous times that the abdominal and back pain are two separate issues.

So from right ovary up to just below the rib is thought to be gynae related whereas the back pain (which if you put a rod through that area of pain would come out the front exactly where the 'gynae' issues affect just below the rib) is thought to be the bile duct pain.

I've been scanned for gallstones, kidney stones etc and had the all clear from that but that's when they noticed the narrowing bile duct. That was months ago and only now being referred which has annoyed me as I'm in constant pain/discomfort and always worrying it's something more sinister.

Back to the GP next week I think as I usually just go every few months as it's been a long elimination process and I feel like there's nothing else they can do as I've been referred.

Wtaf are people being serious with suggestions of ovarian cancer? Stop it ffs.

Fatshedra · 03/11/2019 06:15

Could it be a kidney/urine infection? That can give back pain.
