Holiday for a family of 4 for £1000?

Stiltons · 01/11/2019 13:15

Would like to go abroad if possible- somewhere warm with things for the kids (2 and 9) to do. Current budget is £1000 (would need to cover travel and accommodation). Is this do-able? Any recommendations? DH likes the idea of Zante

What time of year OP? Being honest I think you’ll find this very hard unless you go for a very low budget hotel/accommodation.

LIZS · 01/11/2019 13:22

Unless you can get free child places you will struggle for a package. Assume that is self catering? Book cheap flights (usually midweek, antisocial times) and accommodation separately.

ShetlandWife · 01/11/2019 13:22

What area are you travelling from? Will go a lot further from London than it will from Shetland.

We can get to Gatwick or Heathrow easily enough. What did you think a decent budget would be for this? DH is the one keen to go abroad but I would prefer to save a bit of money and get a nice air bnb somewhere in the UK.

When do you want to go?

TheFlis12345 · 01/11/2019 13:59

And can you get to Luton or Stanstead? Flights from there tend to be cheaper.

NoSauce · 01/11/2019 13:59

All depends on the time of year OP and whether it’s the school holidays ( which I’m guessing it would be? )

lapofhonour5 · 01/11/2019 14:00

Look out for cheap flights and book self catering - might be doable in Europe.

inwood · 01/11/2019 14:01

School holidays?

I doubt it to be honest.

Drive to France and camping would be doable.

Does the £1000 need to cover food / entertainment etc while there?

Fluandseptember · 01/11/2019 14:04

Well, you'd need to find return flights plus onward travel for no more than £500, as it seems unlikely accommodation for a family of 4 for a week would be less than £500.

And then you've got food, entertainment, outings.
I'd be amazed if you found anything, particularly with the £/euro rate so terrible - and I think you'll find eating/having fun pretty much doubles your budget even if you do.
I will follow this to see what people suggest tho, as I'd love to know how to do it myself!

Fluandseptember · 01/11/2019 14:05

oh yes camping might be possible, but I think you'd need to drive.

MardyLardy · 01/11/2019 14:05

Drive to France and camp - beg borrow gear if you don’t have one

Find cheap flights to random European places then source a value booking.com BandB.

SayOohLaLa · 01/11/2019 14:06

In school holidays you'll struggle to get a static van in the UK for this budget OP. Termtime holiday, with someone like Jet2 who do free child places you'll maybe get Spain or Portugal, Greece in our experience tends not to have so many free child places.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 01/11/2019 14:08

I think you'd need to at least double your budget for what you want, to be honest.

Cuddlysnowleopard · 01/11/2019 14:08

Look at Canvas Holidays or similar. Cheapest is to drive and look for cheap deals. We're paying £750 for 9 nights in August in South of France

Joerev · 01/11/2019 14:09

Holiday pirates is a good one

We did self catering to Majorca in August for a week. 4 (2adults and 2 children) for £2200. Thats including food for the week and spending money.

Passthecherrycoke · 01/11/2019 14:09

We go to zante a lot but it costs us about £3K for 2 weeks- slightly out of term time- we always return on 7/8th Sep so the day after schools go back -It’s amazing, i

stucknoue · 01/11/2019 14:37

Is this total budget or just travel and accommodation? The only abroad place you can reach and spend only £1000 for 4 is northern France - found a cabin for £465 last year, ferry was £96, fuel was £80. Unless you are homeschooling it's expensive to go in school holidays

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 01/11/2019 14:48

We need more info! School holidays and main airports- not on that budget.

If you can be a bit flexible on dates and you're open to driving or to Luton then we can find something that's near the budget

MissBPotter · 01/11/2019 14:53

Sorry but it’s not going to happen in school holidays. It would be more like £3000, unless you camped! Might get an air bnb in zante for a little less than that in school hols.
In UK you could get a nice enough cottage for a week in the summer or a really fancy place in Easter or May half term (or go away twice).

distractingdissertation · 01/11/2019 15:15

Check the dates of your school holidays. Ours don't go back until Tues 8th Sept next year and the final week isn't school holidays for most of the country so prices come down a lot. I've just been looking at a week starting 29/8/20 in a caravan in Spain for £500 with eurocamp. Spain should still be hot then and we can fly to Barcelona and do public transport for approx £100 per person so that would come under your budget.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 01/11/2019 15:26

Drive to France. We got Dover- Calais ferry tickets with Tesco clubcard vouchers. Found a 2 bed Airbnb in a lovely area of eastern France (Lac du Der) for £450 for the week during summer holidays. Big lake with beaches and warm swimming in the lake. Lots of options for cycling, exploring etc. 30 degrees every day. Perfect! Have to factor in costs of insurance, European breakdown cover etc. but is very doable on your budget

LIZS · 01/11/2019 15:48

Try to go to France after our August bank holiday when their schools return or May half term before they break up - roads and attractions quieter, accommodation cheaper.

Dowser · 01/11/2019 15:50

Have you thought of the ski resorts of france
Avoriaz is lovely
Aug 1-8 is just under €500 for a family of 5
We stayed there about 30 years ago

We stayed with Pierre et vacances. You’d need your ferry, petrol and food
