Out of date mince

I am usually really paranoid when it comes to dates on food but this time I'm hoping everyone will tell me it will be fine!

I have some beef mince which has a use by date of 31/10. Will it be safe to eat if I cook it this evening for dinner (I will even cook it early this morning so I don't go too far into 01/11 Grin).

I've had a really busy week and my house is a state. I really cba with the one hour round walk to the supermarket (in the rain with a toddler) for another pack of mince when all I want to do is get stuck into the housework and laundry.

I think it looks ok colour wise, I've cooked mince before which has been off colour much more than this while still within the use by date!

Definitely looks fine to cook. Give it a sniff when you open it and that'll tell you if it's off!

I would eat that until about 3rd Nov.

Your bigger problem is what to make. Meatballs? Spag Bol?

Newcatmum · 01/11/2019 08:12

Thank you both that's just what I wanted to hear.

Yes it will be fine Am I the only one , who read out of date mice

frogsoup · 01/11/2019 08:47

Without a second of thought. Food doesn't suddenly fill with deadly bacteria 5 seconds after the use by date! I have used mince 3 days after use by date, more than once, and we are all still here to tell the tale.

Newcatmum · 01/11/2019 09:50

Thank you I will definitely be using it tonight! Although mice has put me off a bit Grin

For future reference, go by smell rather than dates :) Date is often very conservative and a lot of food gets wasted this way! You'll be able to smell it if meat is not okay. Enjoy your mince!

Newcatmum · 01/11/2019 15:47

Well the mince is on.

For those saying to smell it, I have done this but if I'm honest I don't know what smell I'm looking forBlush. It didn't smell vile but it didn't exactly smell pleasant, although I don't imagine raw beef ever would smell pleasant!

So have gone for it and hoping for the best.

A day over will be fine - I not infrequently find meat at the back of the fridge which can be out of date by up to a week - either one of us or the dog eats it - we are all still alive

Newcatmum · 01/11/2019 15:55

I wouldn't be so worried but I'm feeding it to my children, youngest is 2. I feel like it smells different to usual but don't know if it's just me being paranoid.

If it doesn't smell right, bin it. I ignored that one and gave myself food poisoning that kicked in about half an hour after I ate it.
