Dentist has made it worse.. does this sound like an infection?

A check up recently revealed that I need a filling (I had some decay I didn't know about hidden at the back because I wasn't an avid flosser - I am now though!)

I had alot of sensitivity from that problematic tooth at the back which coincided precisely with a swollen throat gland on that side.

X ray showed no infection but I'm not convinced.

Filling was done however sensitivity on that tooth is now twice as bad as before I had it filled, gland is still up on that side and I've now got an annoying dull throbbing pain in my jaw and ear on that side. It's all happening on the problematic tooth side.

Going to have to go back but no appointments for the next week.

How is it possible that a dentist has made it worse?

Is anybody with me in thinking that the swollen gland and now ear/jaw ache is definitely to do with that tooth and potential injection?

Potential INFECTION, sorry!

Happened to me - my teeth felt fine, went to dentist for a routine checkup and was told I needed a filling on an upper molar. Had the filling and suddenly had tons of pain and sensitivity which became intolerable. I went to a different dentist who checked out the other one’s work, said it should have been a root canal and crown rather than a basic filling and that he’d drilled too deep (if memory serves). Lovely new dentist performed the root canal, popped a crown on and I’ve had no trouble since. Get a second opinion if possible. Tooth pain is just the worst.

Sorry you had that experience nore, tooth pain really is the worst.

I think I will get a second opinion.

I've spent the past 4 weeks worrying about this swollen gland and discomfort on that side of my neck, then realised it's all linked in to that tooth.

Baffled as to how an x-ray can show no infection when I'm fairly sure there is one. Glands don't swell up for nothing

If your tooth was sensitive before the filling it's likely the decay was close or into pulp. It's reversible pulpitis

If your decay is close or into pulp there's a risk the tooth can die after a filling, the dull ache is called irreversible pulpitis. If you didn't have the filling it would have definitely progressed to irreversible pulpitis, the filling can prevent it happening but not alsways.

It's nothing the dentist did, it's because you had deep decay in your tooth. Its not an infection it's inflammation of the pulp.

The other option is TMJ dysfunction which could cause your symptoms, could be because you had your mouth open a long time, could be the filling is a bit high and needs adjustment, could be coincidental and caused by grinding. Go back to the dentist

What do you mean by a swollen throat gland?

Mydamnteeth · 31/10/2019 23:24

Wow thank you blue, for such an informative and knowledgeable post. Do you happen to be a dentist by any chance?

I did have sensitivity before the filling yes, but it feels alot worse since. I do know that the decay ran deeper than my dentist initially thought, so that is probably relevant IRT what you mentioned.

What I mean by swollen throat gland is that I have a raised lympth node between my jaw and throat on the side that I'm having the problem with my tooth, I strongly suspect it is linked as IIRC i first noticed it around the same time the sensitivity began (pre filling)

I also do grind my teeth yes Blush

I'm going to get an appointment for ASAP. It's driving me bonkers

Just looked up pulpitis and it looks like you're absolutely correct, the symptoms match.

I also have the intermittent bad taste in my mouth and of course the swollen lymph node.

Thanks so much, you've eased my mind slightly about it not being an infection. I have a history of sepsis and was fairly worried.
