Any medical folk about? Worried about baby's chickenpox URGENT

Hi all

My DS (6 months) has chickenpox; he's not been great but is soldiering on. I'm worried about some of his spots looking infected - any nurses / dr's etc about who can help? My surgery say they won't help because he's diagnosed and contagious so they've said A&E if I'm worried but I'm also worried about infecting others there. Thanks all

I'm not a medic but I've had two children with chicken pox and that looks like a normal stage of the spots to me. The fluid in the blisters starts off clear but goes milky before they scab over.

Does he have any other signs that he has an infection beyond the original chicken pox?

BlackInk · 31/10/2019 15:24

They do look a bit angry. How is he in himself? Does he have a fever?
If you are worried, you could call 111. They may advise you take him to A&E anyway, but drs should always be happy to check babies over.
You haven't given him Ibuprofen have you? It can cause a bad reaction if given for CP...

BlackInk · 31/10/2019 15:24

Meant to say, I'm not in any way medical!

You haven’t given Neurofen right?

HollowTalk · 31/10/2019 15:25

They look like normal chickenpox. Your poor boy - he must be really itchy.

foamrolling · 31/10/2019 15:28

They look normal if angry to me. I think your surgery are being a bit crap though, given his age. When my son had them in his eyes we were given an urgent appointment despite his contagious-Ness. They just rushed is straight through. Poor baby, hope he's better soon!

turnthebiglightoff · 31/10/2019 15:29

No nurofen, just calpol. To me they look angry, but I would expect a temp with an infection and his is high but not fever-y.

Thanks all, you've helped talk me down! Will just keep a close eye I think. Bloody chickenpox! Everyone keeps saying it's good to have it young but I think 6 months is far too young!!

Lots of bicarbonate baths- it’s blooming amazing. Really calms them down. Aquaous with calamine too

Raindancer411 · 31/10/2019 15:34

My son ended up with infected chicken pox and we called 111 who made us an appointment and we sat away from others whilst waiting. I would rather get it checked than left personally, but that is me.

turnthebiglightoff · 31/10/2019 15:38

@Raindancer411 did your sons spots look like mine? We're there any other symptoms?

Make a paste out of the bread soda. Get it really thick. Rub it on. Should help heal them quickly

Pinkblueberry · 31/10/2019 15:46

Definitely chicken pox?? My DS had quite a severe case of hand foot and mouth and the spots looked similar - like bad acne. Just a suggestion because when we went to the GP they sent us to hospital to confirm whether it was chicken pox or the other, I guess it’s not always that easy to tell the difference.

BikeRunSki · 31/10/2019 15:48

That’s normal Chicken Pox. Poor baby! DD was 8 months old and literally covered! The spots are not smaller for smaller bodies ! She had a high temp (39) but her spots weren’t infected. DS had infected CP, I know what it looks like!

stucknoue · 31/10/2019 15:49

Look normal to me. If you are worried
ask if the dr or practice nurse can come out to the car park but I would use topical lotion to cool them, oatmeal bath is good and cal pol, takes just a few days before they are on the mend

Itsallpetetong · 31/10/2019 15:57

Look normal to me. My DS was covered like that at 8 months & they were very angry before scabbing over, even his head was covered.

turnthebiglightoff · 31/10/2019 16:00

Thanks so much all. You've really helped. Will be giving a bicarb and oat bath tonight, have been using the calamine since yesterday too. Dr reckoned 99% chickenpox; he does have some spots in his mouth so I'm letting him have his favourite fruit purées for breakfast and dinner as that's all he will eat! He doesn't even want to breastfeed unless it's to sleep. Hopefully we will ride it out and he will be all back to normal in a few days :-) thanks again all x

He is deliciously chubby!

StinkGhoul · 31/10/2019 16:10

Sorry for gross photos but this is my twins when they had chicken pox - the less severe one needed antibiotic cream, the more severe needed oral antibiotics. With such a small baby I would get checked out if you’re worried.

AlaskaWaves · 31/10/2019 16:11

You could also try sudocrem on the bits that look most sore. When I had chicken pox I found that more soothing than calamine cream

justanothernameonthewall · 31/10/2019 16:16

Hi, my son's chickenpox got infected and the GP was happy to see him. In fact I was told it was the most justified visit to the surgery the doc had that day!! Of in doubt go get them checked.

MartyrGuacamole · 31/10/2019 16:17

I found the absolute best thing was Luke warm oat and bicarbonate baths. I sat him in there for hours, it helped calm the angry red and soothed him. If his mouth is sore you could try freezing some fruit purée in a lolly mould? Or even just squash would help keep his fluid levels up. Hope he's better soon.

StinkGhoul · 31/10/2019 16:19

Things that made no difference to us were all the expensive chicken pox creams

Things that helped were

  • head and shoulders classic bubble baths with oats
  • Eurax cream
  • Calomine and aqueous cream
  • anti histamines (although at 6 months you’d need a prescription)
turnthebiglightoff · 31/10/2019 16:20

@HollowTalk he is indeed a chubster! I'll be sad when he starts crawling and those "elastic band" wrists disappear!

I've put some sudocreme on the worst spots - someone said to try breast milk but the little area I tried that on looks worse today!!

Freezing the fruit purée is a brilliant idea - going to do that right now!!

Thanks so much :-)

definitely use an oat bath, that helped my DDs no end x

Seaandsand83 · 31/10/2019 16:25

My son had a terrible case of hand, foot and mouth a few weeks before getting chicken pox and it looked just like this. Mainly grouped together and they were all over. Is it definitely chicken pox?
