Handhold please...Worried about Mum

I'm worried about my Mum. She had a fall the other night. Quite out of the ordinary for her. She's young and has never had one before. She was just walking across a flat surface and said her legs just disappeared from under her, like she couldn't feel them at all. She did hurt herself during the fall but the most concerning part is what caused the fall in the first place. A similar thing happened a few days prior with where arms.

She's got to have lots of tests, etc. done tomorrow including an ECG and Chest X Ray. She has also lost about 2 stone in weight over the year without trying and constantly complains of fatigue and pains. I just have a terrible feeling about it all.

That does sound worrying. When she fell, had she just woken up to go to the bathroom, or was she awake already?

Trenzal · 31/10/2019 13:53

She was sitting in the living room early evening. Had just eaten her dinner and got up to take her tray to the kitchen. Sad

I hope everything goes well with her tests. Had she lost her appetite, to lose that weight, or was she eating the same and lost it?

Herocomplex · 31/10/2019 14:07

Of course you’re worried, it’s a worrying time. Just take it slowly, a bit at a time, try not to let your imagination run away with you.

She’s getting help to get to the bottom of what’s happening, that’s the main thing to hold on to.

Trenzal · 31/10/2019 14:15

Thank you. Trying to keep calm and not worry too much but she lives by herself and I'm the only family she's got. Not sure whether about the weight loss but I don't think her appetite or eating habits had changed.

That does sound worrying, and similar to my mum's symptoms , has she been checked for brain tumours? Flowers

Trenzal · 31/10/2019 14:42

No she hasn't been checked for brain tumours. She saw her GP today who was apparently very good and thorough. She's sending Mum for an x ray of her ankle tomorrow as she hurt it when she fell. She had a blood test today as well to check various different things, blood count, diabetes, iron, b12, cholesterol, etc. Then an hour after she saw the GP she had a phone call saying her GP had spoken to another Dr and both want her to have a chest xray and an ecg tomorrow in addition to her ankle xray. So that's got us both abit worried why they have been chatting and decided to send her for chest xray and ecg.

I’m very sorry if that’s what your mum has @Her0utdoors but I don’t see how that’s helping the OP? It could be anything, but speculating like that before her mum has had any tests at all is just unnecessary.

Trenzal · 31/10/2019 17:39

It's okay, obviously speculation is pointless but I can't help speculating and googling myself, anyway. Trying not too.

It's absolutely natural to be worried but try not to Google, you will drive yourself mad.
It could be something relatively easy to fix and at least she is getting her tests quickly which is good.

Hopefully you'll have a better idea of what's going tomorrow.

Thinking of you and your Mum. Flowers

DustyMaiden · 31/10/2019 19:49

I had the same was B12 deficiency, hope it’s something so easy to fix.

Trenzal · 04/11/2019 14:28

She had the ECG, Chest Xray and Blood Tests done last week and had an appointment booked with the GP for the 17th of this month for the results but shes had a phone call from the GP saying they want to see her tomorrow about the results (blood test results I think) and not wait until the 17th so now I'm really worrying.

OP posts:
Trenzal · 04/11/2019 14:35

If it was something minor then surely they would just keep the original appointment on the 17th instead of bringing it forward to tomorrow

Horsemad · 04/11/2019 14:49

When my friend's DH was called back early he was admitted to hospital that night with something that turned out to be fairly serious (luckily all ok now).

Just because they've moved her appt forward doesn't mean it's bad.

It could be they've picked up something from the tests that can be treated reasonably easily and they are bringing the appt forward so as she doesn't have to tolerate being unwell/at risk of further falls.

I can understand your concerns, what you're feeling is totally normal but try not to think the worst. Wait and see what the GP says.

What time is her appt tomorrow?

PocoyoandEllie · 04/11/2019 15:05

Hoping it is something easily treatable for her and thats why they have brought it forward 💖

ShowOfHands · 04/11/2019 15:11

Oh you must be worried.

Remember that just because they might have found something, it doesn't mean that it isn't treatable.

I've also been through this with a family member and they had a problem with the bloods needing repeating as the first sample was contaminated.

There are many outcomes for tomorrow and I will cross everything that it's something easily remedied.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 04/11/2019 16:19

Try not to worry, @Trenzal (easier said than done, I know). I got summoned by phone to the doctor's after my last scan - receptionist got me an appointment asap, as you can imagine, my stress levels were sky-high.

Arrived to find out that there had been low levels of thrush detected, so I was prescribed Caneston and sent on my way. Definitely not a reason to cause panic. I hope your mother's appointment tomorrow is similarly uneventful.

Pilipilihoho · 04/11/2019 17:29

Sending you and your mother some Flowers OP.

The main thing is that whatever it is is now known about and can be treated: whether that's diabetes or low thyroid or an infection - or whatever. She's now on the doctor's horizon and is going to have treatment: I know it's so worrying when you are waiting like this, though.

ssd · 04/11/2019 17:32

How old is she? Could it be a urine infection? Knocks older people silly.

Trenzal · 04/11/2019 18:03

Thank you all. I really appreciate it.

Her appt is late afternoon tomorrow so a bit more waiting to do unfortunately.

She's early 50s.

OP posts:
ssd · 04/11/2019 19:10

Well fingers crossed its something that's easily fixed Flowers

Trenzal · 05/11/2019 17:42

Thank you all for the hand hold. I'm really grateful. She has a folic acid deficiency and an overactive thyroid. So, easily treatable and nothing too serious, though not sure if either of those things could explain the fall she had but I guess it could have been a one off. I imagine if it happens again we can try digging a little deeper for causes.

OP posts:
Herocomplex · 05/11/2019 18:24

Over-active thyroid would explain the weight loss. Glad you’re getting some positive help.

Horsemad · 05/11/2019 18:31

Brilliant news Trenzal, so glad it's something that can be easily dealt with.

My MIL was diagnosed at a similar age; there's a family history in her case.

Pilipilihoho · 05/11/2019 18:41

Phew, what a relief - great news, OP!
