Imaginary friends...

DD 2 (nearly 8) has had an imaginary friend a boy called Tom for years, he's always been the same age as DD2, and she'll talk about him and appear frustrated that we can't see him... Needless to say, Tom isnt around all the time, but pops by to stay at our house occasionally. In fact she hadnt mentioned him for months, and we thought he had finally gone for good.
Then tonight then out of the blue tonight, she was sat in the lounge and suddenly appeared cross, DH said "what's up DD2?" And she said "oh I wish he wouldn't do that!" and DH said " Who DD2?" And then she said "Matthew of course " (cross face)
We said "who is Matthew? " and she replied "Tom's friend, he is staying here and is being a pain!"
I think it's funny, and harmless.

Anyone else got stories about imaginary friends? I thought at nearly 8 years she would have grown out of it by now.....

Dd had an imaginary friend who had the same first name as my dm best friend (I'll call her Emma)
Imaginary friend Emma had a dog and every morning on the way to school we would have to drop Emma and her dog off at a specific house on the way and pick them both up on the way home. The house we left them at all day didnt have anyone called Emma there or a dog.
One day she just stopped mentioning her when she was about 6/7

Funnily enough I was only telling my dc's about my imaginary friend the other day. Her name was Sue, she had a dark brown bob and wore glasses (just think Velma off Scooby doo). She 'moved in' with me and my mum when I was about 4 and came everywhere with us. She even had to have her own seat and table setting in cafes and on holiday. Then one day, (i was about 8) Sue packed her bags and moved to Germany. I've never heard from her since, not even a bloody Christmas card !!!

Ds had a friend Geoff. Started about 5/6 and we still laugh about him now at 10. Ds loved telling us stuff about Geoff. Not really in any serious manner, always a joke.

DS, who is seven, has always had an imaginary friend battalion. The main one is called Mate and lives ‘in a treehouse in London”, but there’s also one called Lemon Pants who does parkour, one called ‘Sir DS’sName’ who is a headless knight, and a hundred baby versions of a well-known footballer, ruled over by a sort of Boss Baby figure. To mention only a few.

It used to take forever to get them all in the car to go on holidays.

I used to have an imaginary big brother who lived in our airing cupboard. We had to move for a few months (can't remember why we moved or the circumstances that meant we moved back to the same flat) and when we came back I was most upset that he'd left. Not sure why he didn't come with us.

Creepily I've found out now that my mum had a miscarriage before I was born and the baby would've been the same age as this brother. My Nan (now the most skepticism woman I know) also went to a psychic when I was a baby who told her that my older brother was waking me up at night which is why I was a bad sleeper.

We also had an entire miniature village living in our bathroom carpet tiles. Other than that I had no imagination as a child at all.

As an only child I had an imaginary friend, an imaginary dog (called Gyp) and a stick I carried around, called Sticky, an imaginary stick insect.

My imaginary friend disappeared when a new girl started my school and I had a real friend who 'got me'. Sticky and Gyp stayed with me a lot longer.

PS Drop Dead Fred is an awesome film about imaginary friends

TheBrockmans · 31/10/2019 00:17

One of mine had over 40 imaginary friends at one time. We had virtually the whole of Cbeebies living in our house, along with a few film characters.

They all had imaginary friends, either a few intense friends or many casual acquaintances. Some of them lived in the most amazing stately homes which we whizzed past on our way to somewhere. They have all moved out now although they sometimes come up in reminiscences.

Ahh these are cute, i wish my dcs would of had an imaginary friend Grin

Nordicwannabe · 31/10/2019 06:59

I'm quite intrigued. Those of you who remember your imaginary friends: could you see them, or just 'knew' they were there? Did you actually believe in them, or was it just a game?

DD very briefly had an imaginary friend, but I could tell by the way she spoke about her that it was just for fun. And I don't remember ever having one.

Stompythedinosaur · 31/10/2019 08:37

Dd1 has had an imaginary wolf since she was 2 or 3. Apparently he came to live with us because dd1 is secretly part wolf. He causes much of the mess in her bedroom, I am assured.

notmytea · 31/10/2019 08:40

Dd5 has one so she can blame her for outrageous behaviiur,.just like drop dead Fred

AuntieMarys · 31/10/2019 08:43

I had a few of them, including Nicky, Auntie Mully and Lumbjaw. I was a strange childGrin

Twix42 · 31/10/2019 10:13

Loving these!
DD1 also had an imaginary friend... Ardie the pink and purple sparkling butterfly.. I think she stopped talking about Ardie when she started school though.
DD2 is having a bit of a crap time in real life with friendship drama. I wonder if Tom and Matthew are helping her through it...
Love Drop Dead Fred! Grin

Dd acquired an imaginary stray dog in the the park. It had to be tied to the railing outside the cafe because they don’t allow dogs and once we went out by the other door, through the park and we were nearly home when she remembered the dog and we had to go back. Otherwise it would have found a new owner apparently. She was very relieved it was still there when we got back. Hmm

Ds went to preschool beside a graveyard which we used to take a short cut across and often he would stop at a particular grave and point excitedly to his friend. It took me a while to realise that from his height he could see out a gap in the wall to the footpath below where his actual friend was walking up to school. Standing up I couldn’t see even see the gap. I only realised when I stopped to tie my shoelace one day.

I actually had imaginary children growing up! On holiday one year in Turkey (i was around 6/7) my mum caught me in the pool teaching 'the twins' how to swim, she asked me what I was doing and I told her. After that she bought me twin dolls from a shop in turkey because I guess she felt bad that I had to imagine them, but I didn't even touch them I still carried on with my imaginary family lol. To this day I have very vivid imagination Smile

Newoneonherr · 31/10/2019 13:06

Sometimes I think all my friends have been imaginary. Hmm

TricklBOO · 31/10/2019 13:19

DS's imaginary friend Dragonty Dragonty had his own imaginary friend Mousity Mousity.

LonginesPrime · 31/10/2019 13:52

My DS used to have three identical imaginary dogs, all with the same name (which was also the name of my brother's dog). He spent his treat money on a dog bowl for them once.

DS would get distracted by the dogs when eating dinner so I had to take them all away and put them in the garden while he was eating.

plinkyblonk · 31/10/2019 14:17

We have Charlie and Marv from Charlie and Lola living was is at the moment. According to my DD they are at football and will be back soon Smile

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/10/2019 23:03

DS has 'Billy Smiff' as his friend and Billy did all the naughty things. It was always 'Billy Smiff did it'. No idea where the name Billy Smith came from. He only appeared sometimes once DS started school.
Ds is now 15 and still has an incredible imagination and writes in his spare time.
