Second hand children’s Christmas jumpers

I’m thinking ahead of what I need when and have remembered that the children at our school are asked to wear Christmas jumpers one day in December. I’m fairly anti clothes that only get worn once or for a short period and wondered if there’s anywhere obvious that I could buy children’s Christmas jumpers?

I’ve had a look at the Oxfam online shop but there isn’t much there. All the charity shops near me have stopped accepting children’s clothes so I don’t think they sell them either.

Your school has asked children to wear them.

Ask the school why they support the use of clothing for just one day per year, and how unreasonable it is given the impact of fast fashion and on those with a limited income.

Don't wait until early December.

It has always seemed ridiculous to me to pay a pound to charity for wearing a Christmas jumper/onesie/fancy dress costume while Primark (or wherever) rakes in the most money.

I agree with a pp about making one from an old sweater because your child only tells youbthe night before. That said the following uear I bought hin a christmas cardigan - he manages them better (disabled) and has lasted several years

Facebook market place for sure, you'll fine heaps for sale at a steal in December!

Secondary school definitely do Xmas jumper day

gingajewel · 30/10/2019 22:57

Shpock always have loads on! I get my kids them off there.

Foodtheif · 31/10/2019 11:00

Secondary schools do them too?? 😂. I guess I will be buying them for a while longer then!

BikeRunSki · 31/10/2019 11:07

eBay for sure!
I know you said that your lical charity shops have stopped accepting kids clothes, but ours save up all the Christmas jumpers they get (of any size) and put them all out at the start of December.

I’ve also heard of schools/friends/Cub groups doing a Christmas jumper swap. Maybe you could organise one or suggest to school?

Prinny1 · 31/10/2019 11:26

B&M and Home Bargains sell Xmas jumpers very cheaply. Why not buy one a couple of sizes too big then they'll get a good few years wear out of it?

MyDcAreMarvel · 31/10/2019 11:29

Our school Christmas fair sells them for a pound, donated by parents a week before Xmas jumper day. Could you suggest your dc school does the same.

CruCru · 01/11/2019 08:09

Thank you all so much. It is a bit annoying because my children don’t really like wearing jumpers - plus I’m a bit loath to send them in with a nice jumper because it will get lost or covered in crap.

I would wait another week or two, most shops will start getting things in and putting them up. Maybe people haven’t had a look through their wardrobe yet to see if there is anything outgrown.

But I would contact the PTA and see if they would organise a sale, maybe two weeks before so if you can’t find anything you can still search for it otherwise.

DD’s secondary school did a jumper wear day last year but stressed that self-decorated ones are most welcomed. DD had one she wore throughout December and was big enough to last this year as well.

A pentacle made of tinsel on a plain jumper or sweatshirt tacked into place with a couple of stitches at each corner is easy to do, reasonably attractive and also can be removed without doing any damage. A bit “girly” for some boys’ taste though.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 01/11/2019 08:57

White t shirt, even a white school polo.
Black felt
Orange felt., or any fabric scraps work but felt is easy and quick!
Snowman-Two black felt eyes, black felt coal mouth and orange carrot nose. Tack them on.
Take the felt off after Christmas.
