Is there a delay on "live" TV?

I thought there was something like a 7 minute delay to live broadcasts incase anything happened then something else could be shown instead. For example bud Dwyer in the US killed himself live on TV during school holidays.
So is this a thing or have I just made it up?!
Is there a delay to the news etc??

I'm sure I read somewhere that X factor live shows have a few seconds delay so any potential swear words can be bleeped before transmission. Not sure about other live TV shows , though I imagine all live sport will be truly live.

I was at a big sports event recently where the winners crossed the line, I had time to walk from one end of the compound to the other to find a colleague watching the finish live still... So sometimes theres a broadcast delay, yes. Not sure it's deliberate tho, it's probably for technical reasons

Usually about 7-10 seconds, yes.

stucknoue · 30/10/2019 19:52

Used to be 30 seconds, not sure what it is now

Really?

7 - 10 seconds?

I don't think the bookies would be happy with that.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 30/10/2019 19:56

Sorry.

Ignore me, I'm an idiot.

Horehound · 30/10/2019 23:57

Jeez 7 to 10 seconds isn't a lot!

The bookies react instantly to events, Veni. I bet in play and I know when a goal has been scored before it screens on TV, as the markets get suspended while they recalculate odds. I haven't timed it but 10s feels about right. Markets suspend then a few seconds later goal score happens on TV.

I don't know about other events. 10s doesn't sound like a long reaction time to pull the plug if anything goes wrong.

About 10 seconds on football matches. I live near a stadium and can hear the roar when our local team scores and then I have time to turn on the tv to see it happening.

I watched a programme about gambling recently and it can indeed cause problems with betting and sports events. It's called courtsiding. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtsiding

There can also be a delay depending on what you're watching it on, we see the goal before the pub over the road do by a couple of seconds . Big Brother used to have a built in delay of 15 minutes before the 9pm watershed when Channel 4 got in to trouble over the amount of swearing on live broadcasts.

My notifications tend to tell me about a goal before I see it happen on screen now, so I think about 10s is right for live sport.

I'm banned from having my phone on while watching live games at home, I've ruined it for my ds too many times when I've cheered before the goal on TV! Lol
