Things in books and films that don't make sense to you

Have an unexpected afternoon to myself today. Sat down to watch Pet Semetary.

What I don't understand is why Jud showed Louis where to bury Church. Then afterward goes on about how his dog came back 'different' and always smelling. Why did he get Louis to bury Church knowing there's no good in it?

Been ages since I read the book, can't really recall if it's explained there (though I think I may have wondered then too).

It’s explained as a pull to pet semetary - if you’ve buried an animal there it is always calling to you (have also re-read recently)

BBBear · 30/10/2019 17:58

I think the book also says it was pet semetary that caused the child to run into the road and the truck to be there at that exact time.

Yes suggests that in the film (about Gage being killed). Jud says it knew Gage would die "because I introduced you to the power"

What doesn't make sense is why he introduced Louis, Church meant not a lot to Jud so no pull for him.

Obviously it'd slightly cut short the whole story if he hadn't!!

I think the question is raised in the book directly by Louis.

The answer is very wishy washy and comes down to don't know but it gets a 'hold' over you.

Then some stuff about understanding that dead is sometimes better.

Tbh I've always imagined mr King showing his fantastic book to the editor (or his wife, who I believe is his first reader) and them saying 'this is all very scary.... But why.....?' and Stephen King thinking 'oh shit!'.

Squigean · 30/10/2019 18:38

Ha!! That's quite possible.

I watched the 1989 version. Gage came back real cliche vintage horror film.

Also on a tangent, I don't recall Rachel's sister feature that much in the book (she did also in the 2019 film).

Zelda?

Hmm, I've not seen the films so can't comment on how much she was featured...

In the book she was the primary motivation for Rachel's issues with death. She recounts the deathbed scene and her illness and is clearly quite fucked up by it.

I think it gets under Louis's skin too, as he keeps thinking about ' Oz the Gwate and Tewwible' in reference to zelda.

Rachel and Zelda sound like a really odd sibling set though! Mn baby names would have a field day with that.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/10/2019 19:05

I actually couldn't remember the sister at all from the book. I think it's one of his worst books though - cartoonishly silly. And the film was terrible.

Squigean · 30/10/2019 19:11

Yes, both films have the deathbed and Rachel's issue with death. But she keeps popping up in various scenes being all scary horror film like. Rachel sees her in Jud's house where Zelda threatens her. It's all a bit mental in the 2019 film with her falling down a dumb waiter and such things.

Rachel and Zelda would certainly not be MN approved!! Have a word with yourself Stephen!

Are the films worth watching? I'm in the mood for a decent horror!

Pinkarsedfly · 30/10/2019 19:14

I couldn’t understand why Ripley tried to save the cat in Alien.

She was fucking nails. And sensible. She wouldn’t have risked everyone’s life for a cat.

ClashCityRocker · 30/10/2019 19:14

Ah remus just seen you said they were terrible.

I don't mind the book, but don't think it's one of his best.

SgtFredColon · 30/10/2019 19:18

Cos cats are awesome!

Yes the Pet Sematary thing is like you become infected by the place and it influences you to make more people bury people there. I love the book but couldn’t be bothered watching the film

Squigean · 30/10/2019 19:19

Wouldn't watch either Pet Sematary film if you're in the mood for a decent horror. Both are quite cliche (the 1989 one more so because it's a product of its time). Neither is scary (Zelda scences creepy in 2019 though.) Both more laughable horror than frightening horror.

Clash - I've only seen the recent film version, and definitely wouldn't recommend it.

ffswhatnext · 30/10/2019 19:20

If you want to watch something scary, avoid pet cemetery.
The pyramid is scarier

Squigean · 30/10/2019 19:24

I think Ripley saved Jones because he was the only other living thing thing on the ship.

I'd save him too, if I thought he'd be eaten by an alien

I'm placemarking because I've usually got loads of examples of these and I've gone blank

The only thing I can think of is the bookcase in Interstellar, absolute tosh

VanyaHargreeves · 30/10/2019 19:28

Oh and OP ask HQ to add spoilers to the thread or done moaning minnie will show up claiming you've ruined Pet Sematary for them and their whole family and everyone they've ever met WinkGrin
