Le creuset?

Currently debating on whether to spend £50 on an oven dish or not.

The price is more than I wanted to spend on an oven dish and if I’m being honest, I’m just drawn to this one because the grey (or coastal blue) would look stunning in my kitchen!

What’s the verdict on le creuset - worth the cost? I’m worried I’ll end up eventually spending lots of money buying matching items! Or does anyone know where I could buy something cheaper and similar looking?

Go to TK Maxx! Much cheaper there if you're not fussy on colour 🙂

Minzee · 30/10/2019 18:02

Yep, I say get yourself to tk max or a homesense too. They sell Le Crueset, Pyrex and lots of other good branded homewares. I never buy anything at other people's full prices now.
Their bedding is to die for too, especially KAS Australia.

I’ve stopped using mine due to the weight.

Popped into TK Maxx after work, they didn’t have any oven dishes, but they did have a few random items in the grey colour I wanted.

To be honest I didn’t really consider the weight of the over dish, especially once it’s filled with food. I think it weighs 2.3kg empty, so definitely something to consider - thanks!

I've got a dark green Le Crueset deep casserole that was my mum's. She bought it in 1985, it's still in excellent condition.

Fujexa · 30/10/2019 20:07

I have a large casserole pot, a kettle (both presents), and a few of the mugs. The mugs were dear - I had a wobble about buying them - but now they are my favourite thing in my kitchen - they make a cup of tea feel like such a luxury.

P.s. the pots do work on induction, happily!

Rock4please · 30/10/2019 20:11

Yes, totally worth the cost. If you compare it to an item of clothing at cost per wear, it's a total bargain!

L00seM00se · 30/10/2019 21:17

No not worth the cost.My mother had the whole range and can’t lift it anymore.

The £150 casseroles are a massive price hike rip off. I bought my first one from a hyper market in France for £30. The bottom inside starts to chip off in time. Went to replace it and the same model is now £150. Utterly ridiculous.

Got one of Sainsbury’s. £16 I think. And it’s fine.Would like a John Lewis one but they’re more expensive.

Love my le creuset. Have about 8 pieces, all 10+ years old and still good as new. I dont like the griddle pan though, weighs a bloody ton.

The cast iron absolutely works on induction, being as it is iron and therefore ferromagnetic. The stoneware dish from the OP can’t be used on any hob. Gas would crack it.

If you’re strong then the Aldi cast iron roasters are absolutely brilliant but they really are very, very heavy even when empty. Le Creuset prices have gone officially nuts. I have Diana Henry’s most recent book which is entirely about oven-to-table dishes and in her notes on equipment she recommends cast iron but says that Le Creuset is now unaffordable. If you can find it, either on holiday in France or very occasionally in TK Maxx, Chasseur cast iron is very good. Staub is absolutely excellent but no cheaper than LC. Denby also do a range of cast iron which is often on offer.

I've a couple of Le Creuset casserole dishes I've had for around 30 years (bought in sales) & they are still going strong. I've also got an Aldi copy & it's just as good. They are beautiful, but seriously heavy.

NorthernSpirit · 30/10/2019 21:33

I absolutely love my Le Creuset. I’ve had the pans & 2 casserole dishes for 20 years, they are used everyday and as new.

Yes, they are heavy, but you really do get what you pay for and they are well worth the investment.

hairyheadphones · 30/10/2019 21:39

I’ve got some le creuset stoneware that I got free when I bought a new oven. It’s okay but I prefer a cheap stoneware dish that I got free with a dolmio lasagne kit or my glass Pyrex dishes.

Le creuset is lifetime guarantee and they are worth the money if you can afford it. I bought John lewis own ones years ago as it also had lifetime guarantee. The cheaper supermarket one are usually 10 year guarantee.
