Is dc left handed after all?!

When dd was young a few people thought she might be left handed. I kind of brushed it off and when she started a nursery attached to her school they started teaching them to write aged 3 and asked me and I just said right handed as I had no idea.

Dd is now 6 and just said to me mummy I can write nicer with my left hand but I don't tell anyone. I said write me a sentence then. And she's right it's nicer with the left hand.
Should I do anything? She cuts with right handed scissors and seems to get on ok with cutlery. She's pretty much been raised right handed it's only that her writing with her left hand is nicer that's got me thinking.

I would suggest it is her choice which hand she uses, it's not 1850 anymore! If she writes more comfortably with her left, let her crack on. The ability to use right handed tools is useful in a right handed world, but she as long as her writing is comfortable, fluent and legible, she can use whichever hand she wants.

purplepruney · 28/10/2019 20:01

@Drinkciderfromalemon thanks I didn't know if she'd be encouraged to use her right hand at school. I don't know much tbh! feel like I've forced her to be right handed inadvertently and also wonder why dd is saying she's kept it a secret she can write with her left hand.

I can do everything right handed but write with my left.

Me too. Use right handed scissored etc out of preference but write left handed.

My DM is ambidextrous and it runs in that side of my family

Natsel84 · 28/10/2019 20:14

I'm ambidextrous, I just use whatever hand I feel more comfortable with at the time.

I write left handed
Iron left handed

Cut with my right hand
Hold my fork in my left hand knife with my right ( for main meals ) which I believe most right handed people do
Soups/desserts I hold the spoon in my left hand

I think it's great your dd uses her left hand , encourage her , it's not a bad thing , so dont know why she is keeping it a secret .

TheReluctantCountess · 28/10/2019 20:35

Don’t make a big thing of it with her. Just tell her to write with her left hand if it is easier for her. I’m left-handed, but use right-handed scissors and use cutlery the right-handed way because that’s how I was taught to use them.

bottleofbeer · 28/10/2019 20:37

Just tell her to write how she prefers?

ragged · 28/10/2019 20:40

DS was telling me yesterday that he cycles one handed (left on bike) b/c he has to use the phone with his right.

He insists on writing LH for reasons I cannot fathom. When he broke left arm few yrs ago I pushed hard to get him to start writing RH but he couldn't be arsed & unfortunately it was July so he never got much practice b4 arm school was back in session & arm was healed.

OrangeTwirlGate · 28/10/2019 20:45

We knew my DS was a leftie at only a few weeks old as he only ever used that hand to suck at.
And it continued until it was definite.

We were never asked by teachers etc if he was left or right so I don’t think they therefore need to know or encourage them.

It is heredity so is there other family members who are lefties?

My DM is and her DF was ambidextrous

purplepruney · 28/10/2019 20:45

Thanks. Hadn't thought maybe ambidextrous I will see how she gets in as we're on half term and I see these things more than I normally do. Teach me for making paper pumpkins for Halloween with scissors and all sorts 🎃

bottleofbeer · 28/10/2019 20:57

I'm utterly left handed. Apart from scissors, purely because left handed ones weren't available when I was growing up so had to learn to use normal scissors.

LBOCS2 · 28/10/2019 21:03

I'm so very left handed. Genuinely can't think of anything I do with my right - I even play the air guitar left handedGrin

ElusiveOrangeTwirl · 28/10/2019 21:08

Another left hander who also uses scissors with my right hand. Isn't it weird?!

TeenPlusTwenties · 28/10/2019 21:08

My DM (born pre-war) is left handed but writes with her right hand as she was forced to at school.
I'm ambidextrous, I started writing with my left but then changed when I was 6, but colouring, drawing lines I do with either really. I iron with my left hand but use scissors with my right.

I'd let her choose whichever hand she prefers, but do tell the teacher if she is changing as it may require a rejig of seating.

m0therofdragons · 28/10/2019 21:11

Dh is ambidextrous and writes left handed but everything else he's right handed. I'd be encouraging dc to use whichever hand is most comfortable.

purplepruney · 28/10/2019 21:23

Yes I'll be telling her to write with whatever hand is best for her now. Just threw me today along with her saying she doesn't tell anyone.

Scissors are designed for right handed use. The blades don't meet properly if you try to use them left handed. That's why there are special left handed scissors. It's the same with italic pen nibs. Left handlers can't use them.

Iloveacurry · 28/10/2019 21:40

My daughter is 8, and she writes with her left hand, but does lots with her right, using scissors, etc.

madnessitellyou · 28/10/2019 21:41

I’m left handed. I cannot use scissors Blush. When I cut the things they look like they’ve been mangled. I do almost everything left handed except operate a computer. Also can’t use certain pens. Door knobs often allude me. I’m a fairly decent pianist so not utterly hopeless!

I like being left handed though. And I was thrilled to bits when I discovered that dc2 is also left handed!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 28/10/2019 21:44

I write left handed, use a knife and fork right handed, right handed scissors, knit right handed, sew left handed, kick a ball left footed, iron right handed, balance better on my right leg, unscrew a bottle left handed.

It would be useful if your dd was ambidextrous OP.

NonUrinatInVentum · 28/10/2019 21:45

I'm a leftie too. I write and use my mouse with my left hand. Everything else is right hand - scissors, badminton, tennis etc.

It drives DH crazy when he uses my laptop because the buttons are backwards Grin

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 28/10/2019 21:46

DH and I are both very definitely lefties. Looks like DS will be a righty. We’re both pleased because life is honestly easier for right handers and a bonus also from your point of view is that when your children are the opposite handed they can copy you in mirror image so it’s much easier for them to learn stuff you do with your hands.

poorbuthappy · 28/10/2019 21:50

I have 3 lefties. It fascinates me.

rslsys · 28/10/2019 21:57

Brother & I and our two cousins are lefties. Can't find anyone lefthanded in previous generations.
3 DD - all Right handed.
All DGCs - Lefties or tending that way

bottleofbeer · 28/10/2019 21:59

Both me and my brother are, one of my sons is. my son writes with THE CLAW. I've got an amazing left handed clock that confuses the shit out of most people.

Welcome to my word!
