Wisdom tooth removal pain??

Ledkr · 28/10/2019 18:31

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed on Friday under a GA. it was in the gum still so they have had to cut it and I have had stitches.
I'm still so sore. My jaw is quite swollen still and aches and my gum is so sore. I'm havjng to take regular pain Killers still.
I didn't expect it to hurt for so long. It's not a dry socket cos ice had that and it's not as excrutiating as that but I'm really fed up with it still hurting and of taking painkillers so much.
Anyone else had this? I've done a search and it seems very varied.

Mine was agony for about 3 days. Then starting easing off a bit. Are you taking a fresh dose of painkillers as soon as allowed, rather than letting the pain build up (which makes it harder to control)?

OnlineShopping · 28/10/2019 18:36

That sounds the opposite to me. I had four impacted wisdom teeth and they were all removed in one go under a GA. Even though I had stitches in my cheeks, and my jaw dislocated, I was eating fairly normally (although slowly and cautiously) within a day.

I would think you’ve either been unlucky or else your surgeon was brutal/inexperienced. I hope it eases soon for you.

blahblahblahblahhh · 28/10/2019 18:39

I had all 4 removed under GA in one go! And got bloody dry socket - it was definitely worse than labour!

Thanks for quick replies. Ye si think I'm unlucky. I wasn't even planning time off work but am off for half term as it happens but no way would have gone to work like this.

It's only been 3 days, you've had a surgical procedure. Of course you are still taking painkillers.

Everyone is different but it's quite normal to be sore 3 days after a surgical extraction, the 3rd day is normally worse for swelling/pain and it should start to get better. But normally takes at least a week

subjecttoavailability · 28/10/2019 18:49

They gave me a leaflet after wisdom toother removal and it said you might need to take painkillers for 2 weeks. I took them for 1 week, then it got better. I had another tooth removed when in my twenties and the pain stopped next day. i hope you get better soon

Ledkr · 28/10/2019 18:50

Thanks blue. It's not helped that dh has been on lates so I've pretty much carried on doing every thing with and for Dd as it's half term.
He's off after today so I should have some help from tomorrow.

I had all 4 out while awake. It was hideous and the pain after was awful, lasted at least 4 or 5 days. Whole process was so bad I have never returned to the dentist - I had it done in 1993...

Ledkr · 28/10/2019 19:18

Bless you drink no I think I'd avoid it too.. I've had loads of ops and stuff but this has made me feel dreadful and it's dragging me down too. I just want to lie in bed and take loads of tablets.

OP posts:
BlueCornsihPixie · 28/10/2019 19:24

Aw that's shit OP Flowers

Even the GA alone can wipe you out, the reason you want to curl up in bed and take lots of tablets is because that's exactly what you need to do! It's hard though when you have DC

One of mine was better after 3-4 days and the other took a week of constant pain killers and I had a swollen face. Co-codomol over the counter worked the best for me when I was in a lot of pain and spacing out paracetamol and ibroprufen so I was never too long without pain killers

Lovemycat1 · 28/10/2019 19:31

I had mine removed 26 years ago. I looked like a hammerhead shark for a week, my face was so swollen. The pain gradually reduced. I had a week off work as so bruised and GA. Try drinking soups etc through a straw. Hope you feel better soon.

I had 3 out (in 2 separate ops) all impacted. Took at least a week before I was ok to go back to work. I had to call the surgeon for a fit note! I'd say what you're experiencing is fairly common.

All I can advise is to rest as much as possible and don't try to be a hero with your pain relief. Take the maximum doses evenly spaced over 24 hours as once the pain starts it's hard to get back on top of it.

Maybe see if DP can take your DD out for the day tomorrow so you can just rest. I hope you feel better soon.

opalescent · 28/10/2019 19:44

I had a normal, single tooth extracted last Tuesday and was still taking co-codamol until today. I think it sounds very normal. As long as you feel it's not dry socket, just give it a few more days. Sympathies.

HoldMyLobster · 28/10/2019 20:42

Ye si think I'm unlucky. I wasn't even planning time off work but am off for half term as it happens but no way would have gone to work like this.

I had mine done at 18 and I needed a week off. And looking back on it, I had a pretty easy recovery.

Take it easy and feel better soon.

LittleSweet · 28/10/2019 20:46

My impacted wisdom teeth had to be chipped out with a chisel. I had an infection in one side and bruising of the nerve to my chin and lip. I couldn't open my mouth due to swelling for about two weeks. I ended up addicted to codrydamol. I was in pain for about a month. I think you should see someone incase you have an infection.

bluetongue · 29/10/2019 09:05

I had one impacted wisdom tooth removed and was really worried about the pain after having another very painful dental operation done a couple of years earlier.

Amazingly I didn’t even take one paracetamol after! The worst part was actually fasting beforehand and feeling like I was going to keel over when the surgery was delayed a few hours.

I think it just varies from person to person.

Hope Yu feel better soon [flowrrs]

Ledkr · 30/10/2019 19:54

Still in pain here. Might be a tiny bit better but I'm completely reliant on pain relief and slightly concerned that I'm nevet gonn poo again with all the codeine Hmm will. Defo get it checked soon although I do feel that I have a cut in my cheek with a stitch in which is causing the most pain and I wonder if they accidentally cut me during the op. My jaw is aching a lot today and I have yellow bruising too.

OP posts:
BlueCornsihPixie · 30/10/2019 20:45

They will have cut your cheek to access the tooth If it was impacted.

Is the pain getting worse? If it is it's potentially a dry socket, even if it feels different to last time and they can try treating it for dry socket and seeing if it helps. That's all they can really do, otherwise it really is just a case of waiting for the body to heal

The bruising is normal, don't worry!

Hope it starts to get better soon

Ledkr · 30/10/2019 22:07

Oh wow. I didn't realise that. No wonder it flipping hurts.
Ma sure it's not a dry socket but will defo get it checked this week
I know there was a lot of infection under it so am wondering if I should have had some anti biotics to start off with.

MerryMarigold · 30/10/2019 22:13

I had a wisdom removed in hospital due to impaction. The instruments were barbaric and medieval. I was also in much more pain for much longer than I expected. I think it was 2-3 weeks and I lost loads of weight. It did all heal in the end but I felt fragile for a while. Knocked me for six.

Auntyfannybaws · 30/10/2019 22:14

Sounds really normal recovery. Antibiotics not needed. Keep taking painkillers and hot salty mouthwashes.

starfishmummy · 30/10/2019 22:39

When I had one out and had it stitched it improved enormously after the stitch was removed (about a week iirc). The others didnt need stitches and tha pain subsided quite quickly

apple0pie · 30/10/2019 22:42

I had all four removed at the same time. Sorry to say it was agony for days and then I realised it was infected as my face was all swollen. So I had antibiotics and ridiculous pain killers.

Hope you feel better soon
