What Treats for 'Trick or Treat'?

MrsMozartMkII · 27/10/2019 19:14

We've not really done the people at the door thing as there were few little ones where we used to live.

Now live in a place where there's a good chance there'll be a few knocks at the door, so I'd like to have something to hand out, I just don't know what we should have on offer.

Any suggestions folks?

Sweets and/or crisps

x2boys · 27/10/2019 20:25

Have a look in place ,s like Home Bargains the ,y normally have big bag,s of those small packets of Haribo type sweets

EleanorLavish · 27/10/2019 20:25

Every shop is literally heaving with treat size bags of treats.
Smarties, malteasers, milky bars, Twix....it’s all there!
You can get Haribo single treat bags too.
Popcorn is popular, have a big bowl and they can grab a handful.
I’d avoid anything obviously nutty, like peanut M&Ms for example.
Nice to have some satsumas on hand for those who might want a piece of fruit.
When we were little we often got a slice of cake, or rice crisp or bun which was good too.

We close the gate. turn off the lights, draw the curtains and hope the local kids don't egg the house Grin

Likethebattle · 27/10/2019 20:45

It’s Halloween not trick or treat! We just got big buckets of swizzled stuff from b&m. I miss the day’s when treats were home made...tablet, a tangerine, an apple and some monkey nuts were the usual things.

ParkheadParadise · 27/10/2019 20:49

I usually buy
Funsize
Mars bars
Milky ways
Malters

Mini packs
Jelly babies
Marmallows
Choc bananas
I also keep a stash of £1 coins to hand out.

00100001 · 27/10/2019 20:51

Small chocolate biscuit bars, kit kats etc?

BarbaraofSeville · 27/10/2019 20:55

We don't get trick or treaters anymore. We used to get loads but then suddenly they stopped and it took me years to realise the convention was that you had to put a pumpkin out to show you wanted to take part, but I used to just buy a few packs of kitkats, penguins or similar, whatever was on offer in the supermarket as they were fairly cheap, wrapped and looked good in a bowl to hand out.

Ragwort · 27/10/2019 20:57

I had loads left over last year so make sure you buy something you like Grin or donate any excess to the local Food Bank.

JustAnotherMammi · 27/10/2019 20:57

The funsize chocolate treats, twix's, magic stars, chocolate buttons etc tend to be considered the 'best' treats to the kids in my experience of both taking out and receiving trick or treaters!

mummmy2017 · 27/10/2019 20:58

2 boxes of 50 harribo sweet bags £7 in Tesco.
You may have many more callers than you know of, they come out in droves.
Put something on the door so they know they can knock.

MrsMozartMkII · 27/10/2019 21:05

Thank you all, much appreciated.

I'm hoping they don't come as it'll drive the dogs nuts, am tempted to hide, but just in case I'll get some of the recommended Halloween Smile

We sat and made over 100 bags up last night, we are new to our estate but apparently it's mad at Halloween, a lot of the houses are already all decorated.
In them we put a funsize chocolate, a lolly, some swizzle sweets, chocolate eyeball, gummy fangs and bloody toes and plastic spiders.
Last year we made 30 bags at our old house and were left with 28, kept the kids going till xmas!

Leeds2 · 27/10/2019 22:09

Make sure you buy something that you like, in case there are left overs!

mamandematribu · 27/10/2019 23:41

Is it true? Is it truuuuue?

Hmmmm hmmmm

I do i do I do i do-oo

Princesspickle777 · 27/10/2019 23:53

You can’t go wrong with individual bags of Haribo or the multipacks of funsize chocolates. Definitely stay away from any kind of lollipops! Absolute death traps and my worst nightmare.

Juanbablo · 28/10/2019 07:02

We buy the bags of lollies, mini chocolate bars, mini packs of skittles. Whatever is on offer really! We get A LOT of trick or treaters and have run out the last 2 years so I need to remember to buy plenty more this year.

Ragwort · 28/10/2019 07:34

I’ve bought a load but just remembered that I will be late home on the evening on 31st Oct so won’t be able to give them out Halloween Grin

Camomila · 28/10/2019 09:21

We have a big basket of lollies, sweets, tiny chocolates for the big kids and then a smaller basket of fruit wriggles/organix snacks for the babies.

DM lives on a cul de sack where most people have DC or DGC and most people make a big effort decorating etc.

MrsMozartMkII · 29/10/2019 05:55

Ta folks! Shopping today Halloween Grin

Foslady · 29/10/2019 06:48

As well as sweets/crisps I also give out glow bracelets (£1 for 20 so a cheap option when I was a skint single mum!). I know it’s plastic tat but with the majority of costumes being black/dark it means the children can be seen in the dark easier and they tend to be more popular than sweets

MrsMozartMkII · 29/10/2019 07:06

Ooh, like the glow suggestion, thank you Halloween Smile

OP posts:
ExpletiveDEVILighted · 29/10/2019 07:13

We've always done glow stocks too, I
also used to send the DCs out wearing them so they were more visible crossing roads. Also bags of Haribo, fun size mars bars etc, and satsumas seem to go down well.

spatchcock · 29/10/2019 07:15

Carrot sticks and a lecture about how the palm oil in all the sweets is killing the orangutans.

Yep - I'm the fun mum on the street!

Luaa · 29/10/2019 07:23

We have a mixture of chocolate lollies and skittles this year. We are vegetarian, so always appreciate if people have something other than haribo, although dd will always politely take haribo and give them to someone else if that's all that's on offer. Obviously we don't expect everyone to prepare for us!
