Non toxic ways to make the home smell nice

With a DD currently potty training and two cats I sometime feel my house doesn't always smell it's best Blush. Don't like using these sprays/plug ins as alway hear they are full of chemicals. Just wondered if anyone knew of any non toxic products? TIA

Essential oils. Various ways of dispersing the scent. They can be fairly cheap, too, depending which you choose.

floodypuddle · 27/10/2019 09:41

Essential oils in a cool air humidifier probably the best if you have cats / babies.

nocluewhattodoo · 27/10/2019 09:44

Essential oils, mixed with a carrier oil in a stick diffuser, or in one of the humidifier things, or sprinkled on potpourri. I also put a few drops in the hoover so it releases the scent when I'm cleaning.

Yes, get rid of your sofa and curtains Hmm

Method cleaning products smell really nice but they’re quite expensive. The rhubarb floor cleaner and the pink grapefruit spray cleaner are especially nice.

Ginandgingers92 · 27/10/2019 10:03

Essential oils and a diffuser :)
Anyone remember the fad on Instagram for a while, where people were boiling fabric softener and leaving it simmering away to scent their home?! I can't remember which 'celebrity' started that one off, but my goodness 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Bake bread on a regular basis. Strongly scented flowers. Freshly brewed coffee. Lavender bags.

CanISpeakToYourManager · 27/10/2019 10:05

Also, open the windows every day for maybe half an hour, helps loads.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 27/10/2019 10:06

Open the windows wide everyday for at least an hour. Get lots of fresh air in.

essential oils are full of chemicals. Water is a chemical. Cat urine is toxic if you are pregnant.

instead of artifical stinks packed in plastic, open the windows.

Please be careful, from what I have read, essential oils are toxic to cats. Their bodies can't metabolize them and so they build up inside and make them ill.

If you Google cats and essential oils you will get some helpful information. The pdsa has a helpful article.

I only found out recently and everybody I have told had no idea. It's a shame as I love essential oils but don't want to risk damaging my cats. I have other small animals too and worry that it might affect them badly too.

Yes my cat sadly had to be PTS due to home fragrances being toxic Sad. We had no idea at all that it could make her so ill and she suffered so much before we PTS. She was only young and we will forever carry that guilt.

You can sometimes pick up method in Poundland.

I find that boiling up some orange peel and cinnamon sticks smells gorgeous and spreads throughout the house. Lavender sachets are great. I bring piles back from France when I'm over!

TwinkleRedMoon · 27/10/2019 10:20

I just open a couple of windows a little (so cat can't jump out) and it helps alot. Also use method cleaning sprays, I have lavender at the moment but my fav is rubharb.

I like putting lemon slices, fresh rosemary and a few drops of vanilla extract into a pot of water and leaving it simmering on the stove. Makes the house smell lovely and safe for cats!

Zaphodsotherhead · 27/10/2019 10:23

I second leaving some water simmering very gently with lemon, any other stuff you like the smell of (cinnamon sticks, mulled wine sachets are very nice for that sort of thing) and opening the windows. Yes, it's cold, but if you wrap up and wait until the sun is shining, you will get the best results from fresh air blowing through. Try to get a 'through draught' rather than just opening one window, though.

NeedAnExpert · 27/10/2019 10:23

Don't like using these sprays/plug ins as alway hear they are full of chemicals.

EVERYTHING is chemicals. Hmm

Dry clothes and bedding outside if you can. Open windows if you can. Cut flowers like stocks release lovely scent. Or a vanilla pod taped to the back of a radiator.

lastqueenofscotland · 27/10/2019 10:30

Keeping windows open as much as possible will help. Cleaning up accidents ASAP.
Realistically if you have pissy carpets they will need replacing.

ChristineBaskets · 27/10/2019 11:29

Sorry to hear that @CanThingsChange35 Thanks

Could you be a little more specific please? I have a cat and a plug in and wax melts and this has worried me, did your cat eat something or was it caused by just breathing in the fragrances?

Tolleshunt · 27/10/2019 11:33

I was going to suggest fresh lilies in a vase, but then realised you have a cat. They are toxic to cats, so avoid them if you are looking for fragrant flowers.

WestCovina · 27/10/2019 11:51

Lemon is also toxic for cats.

Soy wax melts are non toxic as long as the cats don’t eat them of course! We bought some soy candles from the vet that are pet friendly that I burn when we have people over, to give the illusion the house always smells nice.

Paraffin candles, air fresheners, perfume etc is all pretty toxic to pets. I have 4 cats and am paranoid lol so have done a lot of research!
