Moving to York

Sharpkat · 26/10/2019 22:34

So, after 17 years of living in London I have just been offered a job in York. I have been out of work for almost 9 months so I have to accept and move. It is with the company that Mumsnetters do not support, but at this stage beggars cannot be choosers.

Any advice about the move? I don't really know York. I would look to rent not too far from Haxby Road.

It is just me so no schools or anything to worry about.

Just want to find somewhere safe to live and things to do!

TIA
Sharpkat

I used to live in York for many years. It’s expensive but a lovely city to live in. My favourite areas are Fulford And South Bank. Bishopthorpe road is lovely but very pricey. The Groves are nice too and easy to access town. Depends what you are looking for and how close you want to be to the centre. You can not fault York in terms of food and shopping! It’s great for both but avoid race days and weekends full of hen and stag dos!

Sharpkat · 26/10/2019 22:42

Thanks @Spinderellacutituponetime I want to be fairly close to the city centre. I don't drive so need to be able to walk to places easily. I think Fulford is up near Haxby Road so will definitely take a look there.

I know all about race days as my family were racehorse trainers. I am already looking up the dates for next year as I know family will want to stay!

Haxby road is the opposite way to Fulford. Clifton Green is near Haxby road and also nice. It’s not an area that I know that well but Heworth also is lovely and in that area. Race days can be very busy and traffic extremely bad in and out of York - just a warning. Places to avoid would be Tang Hall and be wary of being too near the river as it floods without fail every year.

Sharpkat · 26/10/2019 22:53

Perfect! Thank you so much. Will knock Fulford off my list and look at where you recommended. Am coming back up here in 10 days to find somewhere.

You can walk into town from Huntington Road. Heworth also isn’t far from the centre.

Sharpkat · 26/10/2019 22:58

Thanks @BellaVita More for my list!

York is a fantastic area. I've lived here nearly three years, if you live near the 66 bus route it's really easy to get to the city center.

Pinkarsedfly · 26/10/2019 23:00

I’ve lived in Heworth, The Groves, and Clifton Green over the years.

I’d definitely say Heworth is your best bet.

Spinderellacutituponetime · 26/10/2019 23:00

Also public transport is fairly good and it’s very easy to bike everywhere in case you did want to look at other areas...

l moved to York 7 years ago. l lived on in a lovely apartment just off Hull Road, which is just down from Walmgate Bar. lt's about a mile walk to the city centre. To be fair, it's near Tang Hall but when l moved there l didn't know York at all, and didn't know where was 'good' and where wasn't. The apartments l lived in were extremely secure, very high spec, and had keypad entry security on the main doors.
Fulford's not really walkable to the city centre (well it wasn't for me, but l'm in my 60s now) but l managed from Hull Road fine.
You could have a look up Bootham way, depending on what type of accommodation you're after - a friend of mine lived in a flat over a shop up that way. You do get a lot of traffic, but you can't get any more central.

Sharpkat · 26/10/2019 23:09

Thanks all. Think I am looking for a two bedroom house or flat and up to about £800. Heworth keeps coming up so will definitely see if there is anything there.

I love Mumsnet. You are all super helpful.

Bootham way is very nice
We have a caravan in Easingwold justhalf hour from york
So in the season we are here 4 nights a week and in york for about two days or evenings

We’ve had a fab summer.
There’s been the fringe festival where we saw Paul sinha, we follow some great street bands like the y street band and Hyde family jam. There was a Shakespearean pop up theatre and as you like it was amazing for like £12
There’s always food festivals , good shopping, something happening most of the time.
Loads of restaurants and bars, tea rooms and cafes
Couple of theatres which we’ve never made it to yet a daily market
Fossgate music festival one Sunday a month through summer was great

Just wish it wasn’t so cold on a night.
I’m sat up in bed replying to your thread and listening to an owl hooting.
All good

Heworth is nice, it has a fair few students living in it but almost all of that side of York does.

LtJudyHopps · 27/10/2019 00:09

I stayed in York during the week for work for the first time so I’m no help. I loved it! We went to a Thai tapas place it was lovely - phranakhon.co.uk/

TranquilityofSolitude · 27/10/2019 08:07

To be honest, although Heworth is really nice I think if I were you I'd be looking for somewhere closer to Haxby Road if you're renting. You could always move later when you've found your feet.

I'd have a look at these - they're really close for work and you could walk into town in 10/15 minutes:

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-85665599.html

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-63862338.html

That last one is practically opposite the factory gates.

York is a great place to live. We moved to Huntington/New Earswick 5 years ago and we love it.

DrCoconut · 27/10/2019 22:04

My brother lives in Fulford. It's nice but quite expensive, though probably not in comparison to London. I've walked to the centre from his place but that was at leisure, it may not be ideal for getting to work or other occasions when time is at a premium.

raskolnikova · 27/10/2019 22:12

There was a Shakespearean pop up theatre and as you like it was amazing for like £12

Don't get your hopes up about seeing that, the firm went bust (thanks Brexit Sad).

Toddlerteaplease · 28/10/2019 03:20

I'm jealous. I'd love to live in York. The Minster is my absolute favourite place in the world. I have friends who live in Bootham, and they live it. My sister worked at the Youth hostel in Clifton and that area seems lovely. And a lovely walk by the river into town.

Sharpkat · 17/11/2019 23:05

Thanks all. I have now found one just off the Huntington Road and move in less than 2 weeks.

If anyone knows the area at all i would be really grateful to find out more.

TIA

@Sharpkat Hi I’m moving to York and saw your post from last year
Now you’ve made the move what is your experience and what areas would you recommend I’m buying just me any help appreciated

Sharpkat · 03/01/2021 18:15

Hi @Jaynesam

I did move here in December 2019. Best thing I ever did and absolutely love it.

I am still renting as I cannot find what I want to buy yet.

What type of property of you looking for? Do you need access to any roads/areas? Anything important for you? Schools?

Am very happy to have a think for you!

OP posts:
Jaynesam · 03/01/2021 19:50

No schools required just a nice quiet area out of town I have no young children anymore so don’t want to live in a road with lots of children I’m getting towards 60

Sharpkat · 04/01/2021 20:55

In that case Huntington, Haxby or Heworth would all be good options. I really like Huntington. Village feel but 20 minutes on the bus into town if that. Loads of access to nice country walks. Best of both worlds for me.
