Did you get your things packed for you when you moved house?

It's only a few hundred pounds more to get everything packed for you but how does it all actually work? Do you get a team of people throwing stuff in random boxes.

DH doesn't like the idea of people going through our things but I think moving house is going to be stressful enough with two little ones.

Did you have your things packed and would you recommend it? Anything break or get lost?

It will be the best money you will ever spend.

Seriously.

Get them to drop a few boxes off a few weeks before and you can pack up the few things you would prefer to do yourself but apart from that, using a packing service means you can just live as you are until the day before moving day rather than have the stress and disruption of trying to pack up for weeks on end.

Worth double the cost IMO

MillyMollyMooMum · 26/10/2019 21:17

Yes. Only moved next door and some people said we were lazy but it was money well spent. I went to work that day, and DD to nursery, and let my husband supervise! We have so many books it would have taken us days. And they lifted all the clothes right out of one wardrobe into another.

BrightSpells · 26/10/2019 21:19

Do they literally pack everything? Go through drawers? Get the stuff from under the bed? Photo frames etc?

I echo everyone else - but it is worth tidying beforehand, as they are like locusts and pack EVERYTHING. After one move we were being a bit slow unpacking and I noticed a strange smell from a pile of boxes about a fortnight later. On investigation they had packed our fruit bowl with the fruit in it!

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 26/10/2019 21:21

Yes, only once. It was when we moved house when we had a toddler and a baby. I remember very clearly it was less than a quarter of the whole cost of the move (so maybe about £500) and worth every single penny. It took two guys one day and then they carried on packing on moving out day. I would definitely do this again even though our hands aren't tied in the same way as they were when the dc were little.

Tuliptulip · 26/10/2019 21:22

Cross post @BrightSpells - yes I can vouch they pack everything Grin

SpiderCharlotte · 26/10/2019 21:32

One of the things that puts me off moving is the thought of packing up the house! It never even occurred to me to get them to do it but I definitely will when we eventually move.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/10/2019 21:33

It’s their job, they do it every day and they know what they’re doing. The only things I packed were my valuables and my craft stuff and I took those in the car. They have strength to heave heavy furniture about, hanging wardrobes are provided, boxes put in the right places.

If you can, I’d do it.

Katinski · 26/10/2019 21:34

When we moved from italy to the uk, ds was about 4 and it was eastertime..When we came to unpack in cheltenham, we found some extras.......they'd gifted to ds a large yellow easter bunny holding a chocolate easter egg, and for us a bottle of spumante!Star

EggysMom · 26/10/2019 21:35

We packed a box of important documents, a suitcase of clothes, and some kids toys into the car - just in case anything went wrong (which it didn't). The firm packed everything else, including rubbish as I have mentioned Smile As somebody else described it, they move through the house like locusts packing everything in sight.

DCIRozHuntley · 26/10/2019 21:36

Just do it. You will not regret it.

We went out for a McDonald's breakfast and came back to a fully packed house. I'd decluttered before we went on the market anyway.

Worth every single penny and more.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/10/2019 21:38

We didn't.

We decluttered massively in order to list the property to it's fulk potential. Once we instructed solicitors we started packing. We had one massive bedroom and the second bedroom was a bit smaller so we commandeered most of the bigger room to stack boxes and just did a couple per night once the dc were asleep.

On the last full day at the house we dismantled the beds and slept on the mattresses on the floor. Everything else we had done by then.

DonnaDarko · 26/10/2019 21:40

Nope, and I would only do it if I didn't have so much crap I need to get rid of first!

We're actually moving in a couple of weeks.i started today by creating piles of 'crap' and stuff to keep 🤣

ChanklyBore · 26/10/2019 21:44

Never have had packers and movers, but I probably will after reading this. I’ve moved the most ridiculous amount of stuff myself with children in tow in the smallest of timeframes, including juggling babies and toddlers, with a hired van and a spare friend.

OhTheRoses · 26/10/2019 21:44

Oh, another top tip. Pack your hoover in the car. And a bucket with cleaning cloths, spray, and anti-bac, windowlene and Mr Sheen wipes.

Passports and essential docs in a separate bag that's kept with you.

PrincessScarlett · 26/10/2019 21:48

Best money ever spent.

CherryPavlova · 26/10/2019 21:50

Only once did we do our own. It was horrible. Since then we’ve always used a packing service but kept weekend bags for each person and other essentials in the car. We’ve been lucky enough never to have to move out of one house and into a new one on the same day so have always had a professional deep clean and sometimes redecorated before moving in.
If you can afford packing use it.

Carparkticket · 26/10/2019 21:55

Now I really want to move and give this a go Sad

eleanorsimon · 26/10/2019 21:55

Ooh thanks for all your replies! I have shown them to DH and how can he argue with that really!?

Sounds amazing!

OP posts:
MrsFezziwig · 26/10/2019 21:57

Definitely on the pro-packers team here as well. And I’m fascinated to know what exciting stuff you have at home that DH wouldn’t want the packers to see.Grin

DecomposingDurannie · 26/10/2019 22:10

Yes, yes and a million times yes... so worth it... they are quick and efficient and it's a job I hate....plus you've a better case when claiming for breakages if they pack... I've moved seven times as an adult and would always pay them to pack if at all possible financially....

AntiHop · 26/10/2019 22:13

Dp really didn't want packers. He wanted control over how things were packed. I managed to persuade him. He wasn't disappointed.

museumum · 26/10/2019 22:14

Yes. They’re amazing. They don’t look at your things just pack them fast and label each box with where it came from. It’s perfect as they’re not thinking about where you might want stuff in the new house they’re just packing. You can rearrange when you unpack (I’d like us your moving somewhere much bigger).

museumum · 26/10/2019 22:16

We did pack an overnight bag each and keep with us though. Plus bedding. Meant no need to unpack anything on arrival to get into bed.

FarAwaySheep · 26/10/2019 22:19

Yes, and I would NEVER pack for myself ever again!
