VTech smart watch for 7 year old - too young?

DP thinks the VTech kiddozoom smart watch will be a great present for dds 7th birthday but I can't get over VTech being a baby/toddler/preschool toy.

She is on the young side and I think she would love it but I have two problems:-
She plays out and not sure if other kids would see VTech and take the mick
Not sure on its longevity. Her birthdays close to Xmas and I hate buying stuff knowing it won't see the year out as she has to wait so long. Possibly to her detriment though as I can write a lot of things off as babyish.

She has a younger sibling so could be passed on eventually if it turned out to be a dud present but would love to know what other peoples 7 year olds thought of theirs.

Sorry if that doesn't read well, the spacing has disappeared between my two points.

I’ve got three boys: 4, 6 and 8 and they love their watches. They’ve got the original (Version 1?) of the watch. The 8 year old wears his out and about and has never had any of his peers look down on it - in fact they like the games on it and like the activity aspect of it.
If we were buying now we/I would go for the dx2 which is the one with two cameras on it.

We are buying the newest version of the watch for our nearly 6 year old boy,i wouldnt have even given the brand of it a second thought. I suppose because its more than just a watch, it has a camera and games on it. I would be surprised if my sons friends noticed or commented on that. Smile

Ds (7) has the kiddoZoom watch and rarely wore it which I was surprised at as I thought he would love it. He nagged me for a junior garmin and wears that constantly though as he thinks it’s like my Fitbit and so more grown up. He loves doing the chores so he can get points, and him and his friends get really competitive trying to beat each other’s step count.

My just turned 10 year old still likes hers ! She had it at 7 I think ?

Didiplanthis · 25/10/2019 22:17

Her friends like taking selfies on it ! None of them have phones...

I bought it for DS who was 6 last Xmas....turned 7 in Feb. He loved it. Probably over it by now....but did get a really good play from it for 6 months. (He only had 'functional' presents last year - sports kit etc and I wanted him to have at least 1 toy. It was worth it for the Xmas pleasure.

I bought one each for my 5 year old and 7 year old DD’s last Christmas and they sit in my wardrobe unused.

Thanks everyone. She absolutely loves taking photos and videos on her Kindle fire at home so I think she'd enjoy being able to do it out and about.
Pleased to hear children aren't snobby about VTech like I am 😁 just such a big association with baby toys for me although I realise this would an inappropriate toy for a baby so I'm just being silly!

I think it is quite babyish. I'd go for a Fitbit or similar

Anotherthink · 26/10/2019 11:07

Thing is I'm not into activity trackers myself. Dont have the faintest interest in how many steps I've walked and hate the obsession people have checking where they're up to and comparing. So I definitely wouldn't want to encourage that despite it seeming more grown up.

Think I'll go with the VTech, accept it might be short-lived but very much loved during that time and let the younger one use it when she's not interested anymore.
