You're wearing well. A compliment or dated and offensive?

Hi,

So was watching Richard and Judy on This Morning and they were interviewing Louise Rednapp(?...not sure what her surname is now) and she was promoting her new album and west end show, I think.

Anyway, the interview is coming to a close and Richard says "and you still look great". Ok....I guess that's a nice thing to say, although it's not got anything to do with anything, but then he goes on... "you're wearing well" 🤦‍♀️🙄 Wearing well?! What, like a car or perhaps a carpet?!

I HATE this expression and I had forgotten how much, as I hadn't heard it for quite some time, thank god.

You don't hear men being spoken about like this. You just don't. It's still such an issue that women age or "wear" well. Even if it has no context at all. It must be commented on apparently.

Is it just me or should this expression be banished forever?

I’m not easily offended.

I don’t rush to prove how cool I am with the patriarchy though.

The comment literally means ‘even though you’re getting on some men might still think your attractive- for your age’

Sorry you're a bit offended by my spelling, I'm not to impressed with my dyslexia but hay ho I try my best.

I wish there was an edit button, too and hey

I know what you mean op..its not a compliment id give but i understand that it is said well intentionally.

Some say youre looking well is definitely you are looking fat....so your op isnt a strange or rare view of a compliment.

LargeMalbec · 26/10/2019 11:13

Yes, it does go hand in hand with "you're looking good...for your age".

It is a quintessentially Richard Madeley comment, though. Did Judy roll her eyes and mutter, 'Oh, Richard...' the way she used to about nine times an hour when they were presenting it

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/10/2019 11:35

It’s a bit like the comment when you reveal you’re age ‘ Ooh, you don’t look it’ as though looking 40, 50,60,70, was something to be upset about. They’re kind of back handed compliments I think.I

LargeMalbec · 26/10/2019 12:53

@cathpinc, yes, it certainly was. Tbh, RM has always irritated me. I think he genuinely believes everyone must fancy him, so when he implies someone isn't quite 'past their best', they should be fanning themselves with lustful delight.

Of course if came from Richard Madeley. He's a pratt.

katewhinesalot · 26/10/2019 13:52

Take it for what it is - a compliment. Not something to get worked up about.

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 26/10/2019 13:53

*prat!

pickingdaisies · 26/10/2019 13:58

I would take it as a compliment. A compliment from a sleazeball. (I would probably smile on the outside, while shuddering slightly on the inside)
