Has anyone gone veggie?

I've noticed many people have started to go veggie or vegan. Has anyone done this and did it help you feel better?

That's really unfortunate. It might be worth trying to work out exactly what is causing it, maybe see a doctor?

BillieEilish · 25/10/2019 15:03

I have been veggie for years. Don't really like meat TBH and am always so wary about where it has come from/animal treatment/hormones etc etc...

Was missing fish, until I realised most 'fresh fish' in supermarkets has been dead for 2 weeks already.

It's SO easy being veggie. I feel and look healthier and younger and I am size 8/10 and menopausal 48 yr old.

I cook it for DD though! She LOVES it.

Vegan however... I personally don't believe it's healthy. Just my opinion.

stucknoue · 25/10/2019 15:05

No but since my h left me I don't cook meat at home anymore , dd is veggie. I do fry fish sometimes though

Anna there's a company called "calf at foot" or something where they're slow weaned rather than put immediately on supplement and the cow is milked but minimal. I know there are huge ethical dilemmas in dairy and many find it crueller than the meat trade. My dd and I use soya (I've tried other non dairy) huge price difference between a litre of soya and 2 pints cow milk

I became a veggie at the age of 15. I founf it so easy. In Jan (aged 45) I turned vegan and I find it hard.

I'll be honest, right now I'm struggling. It's been harder than I thought.

I've always been a dieter too and as a vegetarian Philadelphia Light was my staple.

Some meals haven't changed. I eat ratatouille - lots still! But I struggle in some areas. I miss cheese and butter. Especially butter and the recent actions of Flora and uncovering of what's actually in the product, have been making me crave butter. Lots.

I've put on weight and my skin's not good despite eating relatively healthy (I don't eat convenience, fake cheese etc.).

BillieEilish · 25/10/2019 15:15

I agree on the milk issue, I just don't buy milk, I'm not vegan but I hate the idea of milk. Think I last bought a pint a year ago for DD's cereal maybe.

She has different breakfasts now.

Love cheese and butter though Hmm so a hypocrite.

DeadBod · 25/10/2019 15:20

I'm trying to eat more veggie meals but I've not gone the whole way as I need to get my arse into gear and be more organised with my meal planning.

AnnaNimmity · 25/10/2019 15:37

I'm ok with oat milk - don't really use milk much, just in tea.

I'm less bothered about cheese since I read about the dairy industry, and siimilarly eggs.

I love butter though. The idea of butter on fresh bread, or toast, or croissants. I need to find an ethical butter urgently.

I'm just struggling to know what I can eat that I either am happy with ethically or doesn't cause me double up in pain.

Apart from butter, I'm not really bothered about food. Coffee, wine and bread and butter could keep me happy (although not at all healthy).

I tried for about eighteen months but, like seemingly many others on the thread, I couldn’t get to grips with non-animal sources of protein and felt ill. Pulses, lentils, tofu and Quorn all made me horrifically bloated and gassy - I thought it was just my gut getting used to the change but six months in it was still the same and I was sick of it. I also low-carb (carbs also bloat me) so anything pasta, rice, potato or couscous based was out as well.

I still don’t eat dairy and would like to become less reliant on meat: but based on the above am just at a loss as to how I can do it. Ideas welcome.

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/10/2019 16:15

Oat milk is the bomb though. In and on anything or just as a drink.

AnnaNimmity · 25/10/2019 16:17

Comtesse, you're my twin. Let's invent a diet that works just for us.

The oat milk diet.

spiderlight · 25/10/2019 16:17

Been veggie for 36 years. Currently trying to be as vegan as possible. Oatly Barista milk has been my saviour.

AnnaNimmity · 25/10/2019 16:18

I can eat avocado and beetroot

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/10/2019 16:19

Anna, I’m in. Oat milk soup, oat milk smoothie, oat milk surprise. Limited but happy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/10/2019 18:32

I'm lucky that I've never liked butter or spreads it's the texture. Not keen on eggs unless I cook them I've been vegetarian nearly 40 years now
