I think I get it but isn't the idea basically that rich people pay more to feel they're being eco friendly? While poorer people feel the effects as usual.
(As well as regular product endorsement)
If you've taken the flight you've taken the flight. Throwing money at it does not remove the impact on the environment, surely. It just means you've paid for your 'use' of the environment.
It may well be a good thing in itself. But it's not a green light to carry on as before and make no changes.

I agree. Really, we all need to be looking at reducing or refusing an action, rather than offsetting. Which is much harder as it involves putting yourself out. I'm going to start visitinf a relative abroad by train instead - it will take an extra 3 hours and isn't horribly more expensive as long as I'm organised. I'd just never thought of it before as it seems too far.

Yep. We have a sticker on a bin at work which says something like "recycling is the best option". Surely reducing and reusing comes before recycling!

Yes! If you've no choice but to fly, or use a particular plastic product then carbon offsetting is a good idea.

But everyone carrying on as before with millions of sapling trees and nowhere to plant them properly isn't going to be as beneficial as everyone using a bit less resources.

Yes the most green way people can be is to be poor Sad no carbon offsetting needed with no heating, little food, money to buy things or ever flying . . .

All of us in the 1st world need to reduce our consumption and that includes the 1%

The same Chris Evans who spouted off that leaving your heating on low all the time was the most cost effective and beneficial way to heat your home. Until someone pointed out that only works when your house has walls a foot thick!

He's a petrolhead too. Lots of superfast cars.

StealthPolarBear · 25/10/2019 08:15

Yes I've heard him talking about thee environment before and did laugh at his love of driving fast cars for fun.that said everyone needs to get engaged - even people whose idea of fun is driving fast cars. So Im pleased he is talking about this. And he talked about a carbon neutral carfest. Which just seems like madness bu I suppose if we accept its going ahead this is a step in the right direction.

Most of these carbon credits are a con but there is a huge amount of money to be made from these schemes. There is a new film coming soon about it, although it is mainly concerned with the problems with many alternative energy sources as a solution to climate change.

When your very rich you can spout about anything! You might even get a knighthood!
