I'm an admin assistant and want to to do something else but not spend loads of money/ time training for something else! Can It be done?

Basically I've been doing admin for years simply because those were the jobs that were available to fit around kids.

But I want to do something else but unhelpfully I don't really no what! I need some ideas / inspiration. I honestly want to enjoy my work and not just do it just because.

Really random but I think I would like working with helping people somehow like maybe advise/ therapy/ helping with money issues/ cab. But I'm not sure!

Could you look for an admin job in your preferred field? That's what I did and then basically put myself forward to help anywhere I thought I could, whilst doing online study on the side.

Can you afford to spend one day a week volunteering at Citizens Advice? Would let you get a feel for whether you enjoy advice work.

I agree with PP, look for admin job in place you want to be and you will hear of opportunities, get your face known etc

Project admin/coordination. Pretty similar sorts of jobs but usually a bit more exciting and a lot more pay. Can lead to Project management.

Admin in HR teams can have reasonable career progression and the hr professional development courses are good to move to each next step

Google your area and mental health support. In my county people with mild depression or other mh problems are referred by their gps to an agency called Talking Space. They employ mental health support workers who I believe are sometimes trained from scratch.

My local cab have said that they aren't looking for any advice volunteers at the moment plus the commitment is a bit big for me now as I have a young baby and already working too but will approach it again in the future.

All I can think of is working in the NHS in the mental field but I don't want to do admin. I feel all I can do is admin and I don't know how to go into something else. I think volunteering is probably the best way to go.

I’m an administrator at the moment, in a mortgage company, and have just started the training to become a mortgage broker. Still admin based, and not as sales as you might think. Potential to earn pretty decent money after a couple of years too. I’m past 45 so I’m hoping to make a decent career out of it for the next 20 ish years.

Prison officer.
A lot of the work is caring, counselling and building relationships

Look into AAT!!

Anyat212 · 25/10/2019 20:28

I'd also suggest HR OP, I was an Admin Assistant (well apprentice) 8 years ago, managed to get into Recruitment (in house) and transferred to HR - 4 years ago. I'm now a HR Advisor - lots of training you can do and after getting into a good company (finally!) I've just finished my Level 5 CIPD. I'll be starting my Masters when I go back after mat leave.

Good luck either way!

MilkandMoney · 25/10/2019 21:03

I did think about specialising in an admin role like he/ accounts etc. But if I'm completely honest my heart lies in working with people directly helping them.
