Do people still do the trick part of trick or treat?

I remember as a kid in the 80s seeing doors and front steps covered in broken eggs or flour on the morning of 1st November, not loads but a few. But I haven't seen any "tricked" houses for years. Has that part of the custom died out?

I expect so. Don't really see it anymore. Although we plan on "tricking" this year by leaving our carved pumpkins on other peoples steps in secret. Obviously only houses that are already decorated.

In Scotland the 'trick' is actually a joke or a song or a rhyme that the caller performs in order tio get the treat. Egging and flour doesnt really feature here in my experience

That sounds a lot cleaner dementedpixie

My neighbour has a full Halloween installation going outside already that has drawn a lot of local interest and I know I won't be able to cope with the traffic so I'm planning to ignore knocks, and hoping I won't have to be out with a scrubbing brush the next morning!

One of mine went trick or treating last year and one house had wrapped loads of ‘trick and treats’

Her friend unwrapped here to find a box of malteasers
My daughter unwrapped hers to find a toilet roll.
She didn’t see the funny side but we all thought it was great and applauded the thought and effort the house had put into it

No. They just get the treats.

The only people who egg cars and houses are twatty teens

IfNot · 25/10/2019 13:16

That's not what trick means. Think of it like Trick AND treat. You do the trick, you get the treat. I guess dressing up in costumes is the trick these days.

Our area do the same as @dementedpixie said. I love hearing the jokes the younger ones come up with.
