Contact lenses for reading

I'm shortsighted but in the last year or so have noticed that my sight for reading has deteriorated. I've worn contact lenses for years and have been given lenses to trial where one is underpowered which is supposed to deal with this. I've had them in for about twenty minutes and can definitely tell that the eye with the stronger powered lens isn't really doing anything. Very weird. Should this sensation lessen with time and how long can I expect it to be noticeable?

I've been wearing lenses like this for about 10 years now, I can't remember what it was like at first, but this year I had to have the prescription strengthened for distance and it became apparent that I had been using my left eye (the one with the full power lens) for both reading and distance and my right eye wasn't doing much at all. The change in lenses forced my right eye into action as the left could no longer read clearly and it took about a month to fully adjust.

Thanks Expletive that's interesting to know - loving the Halloween name btw.

I've had the same power lenses in both eyes for at least 15 years so I'm expecting it to take a while, but it is odd. I've got some multifocal ones to trial too, but thought I'd start with these!

I got used to them quite quickly. But after a year I decided to change to glasses and am happier. I hope it works out for you.

I got on better with them than the multifocal ones. I had been wearing contacts for distance for 20 years and adjusted well but just couldn't see as clearly as I wanted, thats why I had to move to glasses. I can read smaller print better with no glasses and there is not that option with contacts.

I need new back up glasses too and suspect I'll wear them more. My sight has been stable for such a long time really.

I'm still fine in single distance glasses, although I occasionally need to pop them off and hold things up close to read something really tiny if the light isn't good or there's a coloured background (typically ingredients lists on packaging). If that happens when I'm wearing lenses I use the magnifier on my phone. My prescription is too strong for multifocal lenses. I've been wearing lenses for 30+ years and there is no way I'm switching to full time glasses if I can possibly avoid it.
