Lovely friend is taking her 6 month old to Australia alone. I've got her a little bag but I'd like to put some useful items in there for both her and baby. Snacks earplugs gin etc.

What did you absolutely need on a long flight?

Packing cubes/wet dry bag so everything is quick to pick up for changing
Nappies
Wipes
Hand/surface wipes
Muslins/bibs
Spoons
Calpol sachets(check airline guidance for liquids)
Blanket
Small toys/book
Comfy socks for Mum
Mints
Hair ties
Lip balm

Pegs.

The basinettes on the plane are great but you can guarantee the light will somehow come on at a bad time and wake the baby. You can use pegs to attach muslins and block the light.

Huge thanks to the lady in the next basinette on our first long haul flight with DS1 who had not only packed pegs, but had packed extra pegs which she shared.

Clean t shirt for mum & change of clothes for baby. I speak from experience.

Thank you! The pegs and calpol sachets are a great idea.

Another vote for a clean t-shirt for Mum. I also speak from experience.

I did the UK-Aus with mine at varying ages. 6 months was ok actually, even by yourself. Guess it depends on the airline but Emirates crew seemed quite happy to hold mine while I had a wee, and served meals when they were asleep so I could eat.

Calpol sachets are great! At 6 months though I'd also pack a Calpol syringe because getting a 6 month old to take calpol from the measuring spoon without spreading 99% of it on everyone else is a nightmare ;)

Mum should probably also pack spare trousers - you can get workout leggings or something that roll up really small. It's the way forward and it can be guaranteed that baby will have a poosplosion or upchuck milk all over her legs within 2 hours of a 13 hour flight. Guaranteed.

Extra dummies if the baby uses them (good for when pressure pops as it encourages swallowing).

If she's started weaning, then a few Ella fruit pouches or similar (Also encourage swallowing)

She should definitely take a soft sling (boba wrap or similar) for hands free time but if she doesn't use one already she and the baby will want to practice at home first!
