How do you fill a petrol tank?

Stupid question Blush

Not actually put petrol in, but get a full tank.

I usually just put in £10 or £20 worth but am wanting to get a full tank for a weekend away. If you have a rough idea of litres to fill do you just do that? The level isn’t always accurate on the dash board display though is it?

Or do you work it out in cost, say it’s £20 for around a quarter tank, put in £80 worth?

Just fill up until the auto stop cuts in.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 23/10/2019 14:44

Put the nozzle in to the tank and when it cuts out automatically (they have a sensor in them I believe) then I have a full tank.

EsmesRedPetticoat · 23/10/2019 14:45

Erm just keep going until the pump clicks and cuts off. Are you worried it will overflow?

Walnutwhipster · 23/10/2019 14:45

It just clicks when the tank is full.

holyshitdude · 23/10/2019 14:45

Keep on filling until the nozzle on the pump clicks.

Passthecherrycoke · 23/10/2019 14:45

The tank stops filling when it’s fukk

Gizlotsmum · 23/10/2019 14:45

Keeping going till the pump clicks (so you can't pump any more in). They have a level shutoff thing you can normally squeeze a little but more in but I have never manged to over fill a tank

Passthecherrycoke · 23/10/2019 14:45

Full!

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 23/10/2019 14:46

I have to argue with my car, it cuts out when the tank isn't even quite full. On a normal non pain in the neck car the pump will cut off when the tank is full.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 23/10/2019 14:46

I don't get what you mean? You just keep
filling until the pump cuts out

PoppiesarelethaltoSpellmans · 23/10/2019 14:47

It doesn't let you put too much in. It clicks and cuts off.

Celebelly · 23/10/2019 14:47

Go balls deep till first click, then a few gentle squeezes of the pump till it clicks again.

LionsShare · 23/10/2019 14:54

Ah I didn’t realise it stopped automatically Blush thought it’d start overflowing if I put too much in Grin

Thanks everyone.

Doesn't the thing only click off if you first click the handle on?

There's like a catch under the handle but that you squeeze.

SoupDragon · 23/10/2019 15:02

Doesn't the thing only click off if you first click the handle on?

No, it automatically cuts off when the fuel in the tank reaches the nozzle.

goingtotown · 23/10/2019 15:08

Choose the type of fuel unleaded or diesel & put the nozzle in the tank.
Wait for the person in the kiosk to turn the pump on (you’ll hear this)
Squeeze the trigger until it clicks off.
Put the nozzle back on the holder.
THE WRONG FUEL IN THE TANK IS AN EXPENSIVE MISTAKE

Don't be embarrassed Lionshare - I once spent ages trying to get car oil in via the dipstick hole. Didn't notice the massive oil hole 10cm away. Unless you ask or see someone else do it - how you meant to know? It definitely just clicks when your petrol is full.

EBearhug · 23/10/2019 15:14

They have microswitches triggered by a sensor. They can very occasionally go wrong - I don't know this from personal experience (and I have been driving for over 25 years and almost always fill it to the top,) but I temped in a facilities management call centre at one point, and they dealt with petrol pumps among other things.

If you drive the same car for a while, you get an idea of how many litres you need. I filled up last night, thinking it would be about 35l; it was 35.39l. (I don’t always guess so closely.) And some posher cars tell you on the dashboard, I believe. My car is not that posh.

Topseyt · 23/10/2019 15:28

The pumps have an automatic safety cut-out which clicks the pump off when the tank is full and has reached the level of the nozzle. Just keep the trigger squeezed until this happens.

No complicated calculations required. Wink

Danglingmod · 23/10/2019 15:31

I realise this makes me sound very privileged (I know I am, relatively) but I have never in my life not just filled the tank up to full.

OP - it's very easy and you can't go wrong!

So glad I'm not the only oneBlush
