As the title says. Dd is a reluctant reader and loses confidence if the book is thick and the print is small but I need to encourage her to read more, different types etc.

Any recommendations please?

Highly recommend Roald Dahl. Every so many pages there are big pictures which I talk about with my daughter (7). They're also quite funny and engaging, so I read a page and then she reads a page. We started with The Twits.

13 Storey Treehouse series is very popular with this age group. The books are quite thick, but large print and easy to read.
Dirty Bertie books are also popular, as are Magic Puppy/Magic Kitten series.

Have you tried Julia Donaldson? I know aimed a bit younger but the words often rhyme and you can read them aloud with rhythm so they’re quite fun!

Also came on to say 13 Storey Tree House. DS is the same - very reluctant but I bought them for him about 6 weeks ago and he's read the lot and then I had to buy him the one only published a few weeks ago. I got the first 8 from the book people

They are not great literature but they've been a god send. Now he's reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid and we're thinking about Tom Gates and the Jimmy Mccue series but one thing at a time

Loads and loads of pictures in the 13 Storey Tree house books as well so thought thick there's not a massive amount of text

Captain Underpants was popular with my DC around this age.

I found a Beano subscription useful at this age. Sometimes non-fiction books are good. My dc have some beautiful books about animals which have lots of photos, with a few short sentences about each. Or find a subject that she’s keen on eg Lego/space. I think if it’s a reluctant reader, get them started in something which is not too challenging, but fun, so that they can relax and become engrossed in the book.

7 year old DD loves Roald Dahl books and has also recently got into Geronimo Stilton. The pages are really colourful she loves them so I would recommend giving them a try

Cartoons and graphic re-tellings of stories are great for reluctant readers. At this age, DD2 was very reluctant to read text-heavy books, but loved Asterix, The Beano/Dandy and books like the Tom Gates series. The Phoenix comic and its spin-off books are terrific - she still loves those.

It took a while, but she is now 10 and a huge bookworm.
