Costco - worth it and if yes, what?

MrsMozartMkII · 23/10/2019 12:11

Sorry for brevity. Stood on a windy hilltop.

Looking at using Costco. Been a member for years but not made use. Nearest is about 30 mins away so would have to make sure it's worth the trip.

Any suggestions as to what's good from there in terms of food and household cleaning stuff?

TIA

I LOVE Costco. It's full of inane things that you don't need , but you DO need Grin

The food they sell (as in the ready made hot dogs, baked potatoes, pizzas etc) are delicious, and cost next to nothing. It's a bargain lunch.

My dad goes and bulk buys his toilet roll, bottled water etc.
They sell things like Levi Jeans, Under armour fleece at reasonable prices.
It's great at Xmas for childrens books, alcohol, pulling crackers, and sweet treats.

Personally, I buy the HUGE bags of sour cream & chive pretzels, the massive £8 punnets of strawberries and a Costco cake every year for my birthday. Because there is nothing I love more in this world than Costco cake (the sheet cake with the diabetes inducing icing) - it truly is heaven. Oh, the Danish pastries aren't half bad either!

Luckily, its about a 20 min drive for me so I don't go often, but I do enjoy a wander around Costco. It's rather pathetic but it's like a wee day trip for me Grin

Toilet roll is ridiculously cheap if you have the room to store 40 rolls at a time

Lemon cake

Their fresh meat is fantastic

MrsMozartMkII · 23/10/2019 15:25

Thank you all kindly.

Cake! I must stay away from the cake...

I'm wondering about doing a monthly shop. Have a reasonable amout of storage for tinned goods, toilet rolls, etc.

We have a membership and got one for my sis who lives 3 hours away from us but has one local to her too. Ours is just under an hour away but we only go monthly or every other month. Spend about £100 each time. What we tend to buy:
Mince- to then portion out. Massively cheap for good mince
Chicken- same as above
Breaded chicken snitzel - used to live in Germany so it's a must.
We brought our wedding champagne from there and it saved us tons even factoring in corkage
Zip lock bags
Cat food
Washing powder/liquid/conditioner
Large pump bottles of body wash
Flowers are really lovely in Costco
Clothes- got some Levi's for £35!
Large salad bowls
Hot cooked chickens
Sorry I'm pretty addicted to it haha

Great for large families. Organising buffets etc and there are some Christmas bargains like toys and books but not all of it is inexpensive. Its worth baring in mind, roughly, what you pay per 100g for some food items like tuna.

Also consider the room you have. I don't have the space to store bulk items. Batteries are very handy as they come in massive packs which is great for Christmas and birthdays.

Kirkland toilet roll
Kirkland kitchen roll
Pancakes
Broccoli salad
Pampers nappies
Fresh food and baked goods are very good

Loads more but can’t remember right now

I feel a list from your suggestions folks and a trip over there is in order.

A friend has recommended one of their dog foods, though I can't remember which one.

I love Costco...I had to let me membership
Lapse though because I was spending too much money in there (when I'd hoped I was going to save Grin)

Their cakes & pastries are amazing
(They do beautiful personalised birthday cakes for a large crown too!)
The wines
Cheeses
Salmon
Hummus and dips
Pizzas & precooked meals
The ribs are to die for
All their meat is great quality
Fruit and veg
Sweets & crisps

Their Christmas stuff: wrapping paper and cards, decorations
Kids & adults books
Christmas crackers

You can save a bit by buying the following in bulk:
Toilet rolls / bottled water / tinned tomatoes etc.
Coffee & tea
Pet food
Condiments and sauces

Simonsaysitschristmas · 23/10/2019 16:37

What we always get:
Olives
Loo roll
Dishwasher tablets
Hummus
Alcohol - some (mainly spirits) work out really cheap, others not so much
Brownie mix
Fresh cakes (divine)

AbbieLexie · 23/10/2019 17:25

It takes me 20 - 30 minutes to drive to Costco most weeks to do a shop and fill my petrol tank. You do need to be disciplined and have storage space. We feel we save a fortune (& spend a fortune). Shopping list is a must and we regularly price check with supermarkets and Amazon.

Frozen Portuguese custard tarts

MrsMozartMkII · 23/10/2019 20:38

Thank you :)

Think I'll be trying hard on the self control around all those cakes and pastries!

Cake, cake and more cake, they are delicious oh and the muffins are good as well.

Mustbetimeforachange · 23/10/2019 20:49

It's funny how people love the big cakes. I can't bear them (but I do love everything else). My regular buys are a hot chicken, tomato pasta sauce, Danish pastries, croissants, bin bags, frozen stuff.

Dizzywizz · 23/10/2019 21:03

I also really dislike the cakes! My fil for some reason loves them, and always gets them for any family celebration (big family). Everyone else just groans!!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/10/2019 21:10

I don't like any of the cakes and pastries in Costco either. They're very sweet and the ingredients list looks more like a chemistry set than a list of basic foodstuffs.

They have gin advent calendars in at the moment. Cheap for sheba cat food and catsan litter if you have a cat. You can sign up for email alerts to time your visit with offers that are good for you.

Devonishome1 · 23/10/2019 21:11

I bought this lovely throw/blanket for £11 it’s amazing so soft and warm I love it.

Costco - worth it and if yes, what?
GraceQuirrell · 23/10/2019 21:44

Toilet Rolls, Kitchen Rolls, Black Bags, White bin liners (both recyclable), large blocks of cheddar cheese which last ages, bottled water, frozen samosas that are exactly like the ones from Indian restaurants or street food vans, Kirkland Steak Strips (particularly good if you are doing a low cholesterol diet), part baked bread, sacks of easy cook rice - which last me at least 6 months, Zeiss Lens wipes.

Thats my "usual"list of things to get then I also have a look at their special offer booklet before we go and see what coupons and offers are on that month. I love Costco - very often my savings work out around 50% of supermarket prices, and where the savings aren't quite as obvious it's often down to the Costco product being better quality.

MrsMozartMkII · 24/10/2019 07:53

More thank yous.

I'm feeling quite excited. Will be heading that way soon!
