Going in for a hysterectomy, asked for things to take with me on another thread and was advised that podcasts are great. But I've never listened to any before. So, are there any recommendations of podcasts to listen to while I'm in hospital?
Please and thank you. I'm trying to keep myself busy and organise everything before my op on Thursday.

I use the apple app and I started off with ‘the teachers pet’ which is about a woman who was killed by her husband but it was swept under the carpet by the police.

You could look up people who you already like, comedians etc to see if they have done anything.

AmazingAardvark · 22/10/2019 20:36

What sort of thing are you into? E.g., true crime, politics, comedy, TV shows? There’s thousands of podcasts out there so will help if you can say a bit more about your interests Smile.
One I always recommend is “Criminal” - it tells real life stories about people involved in crime, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny.

BIWitch · 22/10/2019 20:37

Off Menu - Ed Gamble and James Acaster talk to a different celebrity each week about their dream meal in their dream restaurant. Every Wednesday

Kermode & Mayo's film review - every Friday

The Kitchen Cabinet - hosted by Jay Raynor. A bit like Gardeners' Question Time, except it's about food!

Get the BBC sounds app. Loads of podcasts and also Poscast series. They section them off by genre. So you can browse the categories that take your fancy!
If you like true crime... there are loads.
I absolutely love podcasts. Listen at home, while doing housework, in the car etc...

FrankenCat · 22/10/2019 20:42

I love a good true crime story.
I'll be using the Apple app too if that helps.
I like comedy, crime, scary stuff, a wide range of things really.
Is it best to download in advance? I think the hospital has the cloud internet but not sure on if that's going to work as I sometimes can't connect to it.

No Such Thing As A Fish is brilliant - it's presented by the QI Elves, who talk about the most interesting facts they've discovered that week

I would download in advance to be on the safe side. Don't forget you can also download past editions.

flissity · 22/10/2019 20:49

Ok if you like true crime, you have I listen to ( and will be hooked on)

Beyond Reasonable Doubt
And
The Doorstep Murder.

Both free and on BBC sounds.

WaningGibbous · 22/10/2019 20:50

Desert Island Discs- I'm sure there's a favourite DID thread on here. David Nott was mentioned a few times as a good one to listen to.

PancakeAndKeith · 22/10/2019 20:50

Do The Right Thing is a great comedy.
Drunk Women Solving Crime is great for comedy and true crime.
All Killa No Filla is a good comedy crime combination.
Fingers On Buzzers is about TV game shows and is a nice easy listen.

Death in Ice Valley is about an unsolved murder. It’s a BBC podcast and sounds lovely on headphones.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 22/10/2019 20:51

If you fancy a scary one, The Disappearance of Charles Dexter Ward is good - sort of pseudo true crime/drama. I also really loved S Town, and there are loads of great true crime podcasts (once you listen to one, you'll get recommendations for loads!)

CalamityJune · 22/10/2019 20:51

My Favourite Murder is good if you like True Crime. Beware though, that the more recent ones are extremely self indulgent and spend more than half the episode talking amongst themselves. This is the plague of the popular podcast I find.

Serial, S Town and Dirty John are very good and well edited.

As mentioned, BBC Sounds is a good shout. There are some good political ones on there if you like current affairs (Brexitcast, Nick Robinson

Lore is good if you like wierd, spooky stories.

AmericanHousewifeFan · 22/10/2019 20:52

Second No Such Thing As A Fish. Love it. I also listen to:
Stuff you should know
Stuff to blow your mind
The curious cases of Rutherford & Fry
The infinite monkey cage
Unexplained.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 22/10/2019 20:52

Sorry, it's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. (It's a BBC one.)

Socksontheradiator · 22/10/2019 20:53

The AIBU one by mumsnet is hilarious. I listen on Spotify.
Also:
Happy Place (Fearne Cotton)
The minimalists
The Guilty feminist
Ted talks daily
Brexitcast Blush
I'd recommend downloading before you go.

Good luck with your op Flowers

BIWitch · 22/10/2019 21:01

I think if you subscribe to them they will download to your device - but definitely worth checking before you go in

AmazingAardvark · 22/10/2019 21:16

Criminal - true crime
Lore - spooky true stories
My Dad Wrote a Porno - comedy
This is Love - sister show to Criminal, focusing on true stories about love
Serial - true crime
Someone Knows Something - true crime
Missing and Murdered - true crime
How I Built This - interviews with CEOs/Founders of famous companies
The West Wing Weekly (obviously only if you are a fan of The West Wing TV series!)

Nunyabusiness · 22/10/2019 21:18

Sh*gged married annoyed

Hilarious

Frenchfancy · 22/10/2019 21:24

I really like Hidden Brain. A psychology podcast.

Guilty feminist is good when it's not being woke.

No such thing as a fish is also good.

TBH though I listen to podcasts when I've finished my audio book for the month. I much prefer an audio book to a podcast.

catcatcatcat · 22/10/2019 21:25

Elis & John on 5 live. Really funny best friends. One is a dad and welsh, the other his best mate. Makes me laugh out loud lots. Sweet and kind too.

raskolnikova · 22/10/2019 21:26

Ear Hustle (about life in San Quentin prison)
Serial (season one, true crime)
This American Life (about lots of different things)
Heavyweight (I don't know what category this is really but it's one of my favourites)
RHLSTP (comedy)
Criminal (true crime)

There are lots of other good ones, those are off the top of my head.

Oh yes I second Hidden Brain too! Invisibilia is similar.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 22/10/2019 21:28

My Dad Wrote a Porno Smile

CooperLooper · 22/10/2019 21:30

Anything by Wondry - another vote for Dirty John but you must must must listen to a podcast called Dr Death. It blew my mind 🤯

Also it's been years since I've listed to it, but there's a hilarious series out there called something like My Dad Wrote A Porno (literally does what it says on the tin) and it's so funny.

NonUrinatInVentum · 22/10/2019 21:31

I've just finished Confronting OJ with Kim Goldman, brother of Ron Goldman who was killed with Nicole Simpson. Tragic and captivating.

Mother of Pod - 2 Irish mothers of toddlers telling it like it really is in all its glory details.

School for Dumb Women is ace too. Everything you didn't know you needs to know.

Good luck with your surgery OP!
