Head Lice!

I've tried a coconut oil based treatment I bought off Amazon but they keep coming back, nightmare!

Which is the best treatment have you found? Are the strong chemical ones better?

The "once" treatments (boots is fine or Hedrin if you want) then conditioner + nit comb twice a week.

Tea tree spray, plait hair back tightly for school, encourage the kids not to share hats.

Whattodoabout · 21/10/2019 20:15

Hedrin is the only thing that works.

BackforGood · 21/10/2019 20:19

Condition (any cheap conditioner) and a nitty gritty comb and regularly combing through - do it once a week once you think they are gone, and prevent any one that wanders on to their head settling in and laying millions of eggs

Vodka 😂😂
Years ago when dd got head lice the health visitor told me to rinse her hair in vodka.
It worked, when the rest of the class got reinfected she never😂😂

juicey09 · 21/10/2019 20:22

I got the proper nit stuff, hedrin or whatever it's called and it cleared the nits and the eggs. I now use a great nit repellent spray, I got it in Tesco (can't remember the brand), so far, no nits for ages now.

I tried the conditioner and the nit comb but found that doesn't deal with the eggs. You need the chemicals!

Sparrowlegs248 · 21/10/2019 20:23

I've had a nightmare with ds2 bringing lice home from pre school. He goes in clear, cones out with lice.

I use the leave in mousse, I think it's a "Once" treatment. You can put it on overnight or in the morning and wash out later. I usually do it on a Friday night or Saturday morning if we're not going anywhere. Then comb with conditioner each bath time.

Spray on the vosene detangler, it's got tea tree and other foul smelling oils in it.

VerbenaGirl · 21/10/2019 20:25

Vinegar and lavender essential oil rinse to loosen them, then lots of conditioner and nitty gritty comb, then a good spritz of tea tree to keep them away.

AdoraBell · 21/10/2019 20:29

Either coconut oil, not products with it, just the oil, or olive oil and vinegar. The oil kills the adults and the vinegar dislodges the eggs. You still need to comb through with a nit comb.

Easier to mix the 2 together, work it into to roots and along the hair, comb through with a standard comb to distribute. Wrap hair and leave for 30 mins. Comb thoroughly with nit comb and wash the oil off. Repeat after 7 days.

Be careful not to let the vinegar to run into the eyes, I used to have a folded towel on DC forehead with their head tilted back slightly.

Freetodowhatiwant · 21/10/2019 20:30

We have had them on and off since summer (yes me too and my two boys but not DH) and it's a nightmare. I remember having them as a school age child and the treatment needed to be done once and that was it but apparently the new improved lice are resistant to a lot of things. We have tried all the chemist bought lotions including Hedrin and Once plus the combs and nothing has worked.

The other day my hairdresser friend told me to do the conditioner (any old one) thing as people have mentioned above for three days in a row. We are on our third day. So far no itching. But essentially completely soak DRY hair with conditioner and leave in for about 15 mins or so and then go through it all with a metal nit comb. Wash out with shampoo and conditioner as normal and repeat every day for 3 days. He said the repeating will get rid of all the live ones and hopefully any eggs they have left. Strong little fuckers as they are.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2019 20:33

3 days is not long enough as the life cycle is 3 weeks! Condition and comb every few days for 3 weeks or treat with hedrin suffocating stuff every week for 3 weeks

Sickoffamilydrama · 21/10/2019 20:38

You need the treatment that is silicone based, it suffocates them, no one can become resistant to suffocation!
Also need to retreat at 5 day intervals for a few weeks so that if the first time you miss an egg it doesn't all start again.

Sunnyuplands · 21/10/2019 20:41

Op we used the hedrin shampoo.

You put it on dry hair. Leave it 10 mins l. Lather up in shower then wash out, comb out. After... Supposed to kill everything...

With my own eyes two live bugs played dead for a bit then crawled around... So I don't know what to use...

InTheTempest · 21/10/2019 20:45

Thank you for all the tips! I think I'm going to try combing through every night with conditioner and also try Hedrin and a bottle of cheap vodka as well.

Vinorosso74 · 21/10/2019 20:57

Yes the Hedrin of Lycoclear ones which suffocate them work.
Combing with a nitty gritty comb on conditioned hair is worth doing-I do it weekly on DD as I figure at least it combs out any eggs etc. Luckily she's not had any for ages.
The preventative sprays, tea tree oil are all a con.

Vinorosso74 · 21/10/2019 20:59

Guess they'll die happy in the vodka! I did read straighteners would kill them but you can't get right to the scalp and not the best for the hair either.

MsMustDoBetter · 21/10/2019 21:11

Use a treatment, but also wet comb every night for 7 nights.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2019 21:12

7 nights isn't enough plus you dont need to comb every night. Every few nights for 3 weeks would be more effective

Wolfiefan · 21/10/2019 21:18

NHS says every three days for 21 days minimum. Nitty Gritty and follow instructions meticulously.
Or a Hedrin product to smother the buggers.

Youreterriblemuriel99 · 21/10/2019 21:24

We (2 DC & me 🙄) has them a few months ago. I bought some over the counter stuff from boots with pesticides in. Worked a treat - I applied it immediately and then obsessively combed my hair multiple times a day for 2 weeks after and they went.

In the DC I treated and then went through with a comb and just looking very closely/scraping out with nails for about 2 weeks after too. They are stubborn little buggars and the treatment didn’t get rid of all so the manual method picked out those who were left. It was a chore but needs must.

Good luck!
