Hanging washing out

As Autumn is now officially here, the days to get the washing hung outside can be few and far between. What I want to know is do you still hang your washing out in winter on a dry fine day? Or is it futile and a waste of time?

I love getting my washing outside but then usually bring it in around 4ish and hang it on an airer inside or in the dryer. Am I wasting my time hanging it twice?

Only if its mild and blustery otherwise it's still as damp when I take it in as when I put it out! It's the wind factor that helps I find, as in winter my garden gets nowhere near enough sun during even a sunny winter's day.

EdWinchester · 21/10/2019 13:18

My mil still pegs out washing. Then she brings it in several hours later and tumble dries it. Seems a huge waste of effort.

But I say that as a year round tumble dryer fan.

AliceLittle · 21/10/2019 13:19

If the ground is dry it's going outside. Even half an hour is less water in the house so I'll always put it out first even if I need to move it indoors later.

ColdRainAgain · 21/10/2019 13:19

If its dry, mine goes out. It comes in like ice, and feels no drier, but takes no time on the airers.
Even an hour or 2 after work makes a difference if there is a slight breeze.

Blingandrings · 21/10/2019 13:20

I agree about wind. i hung mine out yesterday all day in the sun and it was still wet when I brought it in. No wind. I think unless its very windy it just doesn't dry at all. I am trying not to use the tumble drier as our electricity bills went through the roof last winter. Wet washing all over the house. I bought one of those heated airers which is useless.

If it's a dry windy day , I especially like to peg bedding out .
Yesterday I pegged my bedding out and it was dry but a couple of heavier things were a bit damp so I finished off on the radiator.
I do hate that about winter all your washing on airers .

helpmum2003 · 21/10/2019 13:27

Mine's out today. Sunny with gentle breeze, not hot as 'up north'. Think it'll need finishing overnight but it'll smell lovely and reduces tumble use and moisture in house....

timeforawine · 21/10/2019 13:29

Yep if there is a breeze and ideally some sun, i then finish in the tumble drier which only takes maybe 30 mins.
I need to to get the sun on my daughters clothes for each new stain she acquires at nursery

dustyphoenix · 21/10/2019 13:34

Yep, I always have to hang twice in the winter - don't bother on still days but do if there's any sort of breeze. It's never fully dry on coming in and has to be rehung, but makes a massive difference to the damp in the house.

Mrs1 · 22/10/2019 17:29

I still peg mine out on a dry day especially if there is wind, and especially towels. I find if they don't dry outside they smell and need washing again, which is a waste of time and money so always try get them out, even if they need finishing on radiator. We don't have a tumble drier

lazylinguist · 22/10/2019 17:33

Imo it needs to be at least warmish or windy, preferably both. If it's a still, chillyish day I wouldn't bother, as it won't dry. In any case, I live in Cumbria, so it's mostly raining anyway. Grin

springydaff · 22/10/2019 19:03

I hang my washing out year round - in fact I've just put out 4 loads. Missed the gloriously sunny day as new washing machine arrived late.. 😒. It dries quickly and I just adore that smell!

Yes in the winter I often bring it in to finish off drying but I have a 'sheila maid' which takes a huge amount of washing which I hoik up to the ceiling out of the way and it easily dries overnight.

FriedasCarLoad · 22/10/2019 19:10

If there’s either wind or sun (but no rain) it goes out.

SilveryMountainStream · 22/10/2019 19:18

@Blingandrings have you tried putting a bedsheet over the top of your heated surer to make a sort of 'tent' cover?

It makes a huge difference as to how quickly my washing dries on there. I would go so far as to say it pretty halves the drying time.

Lakeland do sell a proper drying tent cover for the heated airers, but I find a bedsheet/duvet cover works just as well. Can either use a wet one that you're drying anyway or a dry one.

Also find its worth putting it near a window that's slightly ajar, helps with condensation as well then, plus speeds drying time.

Nanalisa60 · 22/10/2019 19:21

I put washing out all year round as long as it dry I but it out. I look at BBC app at night then I’d it says it’s dry next day the I but the wash on at night then in morning I do another spin at 1600 spin. Then it goes on line first thing. Then finish off on radiators late afternoon.

Jolonglegs · 22/10/2019 19:23

Hang out whenever we can, but it often comes in damper than when it went out!

EleanorReally · 22/10/2019 19:25

mine goes out all year round, very very rarely tumble dry.
i was sad not to have put a wash on today it looked a lovely day. but i didnt have time.
will religiously check various weather reports

Daddystilllost · 22/10/2019 19:28

Can't stand the smell of laundry after being hung out. Awful

helpmum2003 · 22/10/2019 20:06

@Daddystilllost you're the first person I've ever heard say that!!

buzzkills · 22/10/2019 21:07

I often hang it on an after and then pop the airer outside for a couple of hours. Then it gets outside for a bit and it does help, and no need to hand twice. Use clothes pegs on the airer to stop it blowing away.

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 22/10/2019 21:22

buzzkills I do exactly the same! We have an awning over the back door, so even when snowing it goes out, the awning keeps a lot of rain and snow off. I bring it in at night, tho I still might have to tumble it for a few minutes the following morning. Just getting the air through it makes a huge difference.

PulpPixie · 22/10/2019 21:30

I don’t like the smell either. I never hang washing out. Tumble all year
