How did you get your puppy to settle/sleep through the night

We’re getting a puppy in a month and I can’t figure out the sleeping arrangements, there’s so much conflicting advice.

What’s worked for you?

Crate or pen? In bedroom? In kitchen? Wake through the night to take them out to the toilet or puppy pads? Soothe them or let them cry it out? Help!

(As a mum I failed massively! DS took 2 years to sleep through, was in with us for the first 18 months and still likes someone to sit by his door while he falls asleep and he’s 10! (He does fall asleep very quickly so I don’t mind obliging, I’m sure he won’t want me there when he’s 18!!🤞🏻)

We put our puppy in a cage at night. Simply because we rented. If it had been our own home, we wouldn't.

His 'home' is the kitchen, it always has been as it's a tiled floor, however we were incredibly lucky as he was house trained within a week. He made very little mess wee wise and only pooed once in the house.

He also only cried the first night, and My DH got up with him and let him fall asleep on his chest in the chair. (DH snores, so That probably did the trick Grin)

Wouldn't use pads personally as you are teaching them it's okay to pee and poo inside.
Puppies can't usually go all night without needing the loo. Their bladders are small and they lack control. All puppies are different, but with mine, I took her out 3 to 4 hours after going to bed, so usually between 2 and 3 am, we then got up about 6 to 6.30am. It is very tiring! She was in a crate overnight by the bed, so I could hear if she started getting the fidgets. She only ever used to fidget though, she never cried at all, but I think that was more due to the fact she was never left alone. She sleeps on the bed now as an adult - the crate was put away a long time ago. As she got older I got up later and later for the middle of the night trip outside. By the time she was 5 months she was mostly house trained and could sleep through the night.
Personally I would never let a puppy 'cry it out', they need reassurance, not abandonment, but there are many different views on this. However, I have never had a dog who suffers from separation anxiety, and I do wonder if not letting them cry it out has something to do with it.
