Short break. Why is Dublin so bad

I'm looking for a city break and Dublin was on my list. It scored highly on the worst holiday thread, can anyone tell me why

YY to hilarious Yelp reviews.

Some of the posters on this thread, remind me of some of the clueless people who post reviews on Trip Advisor. They hate somewhere because it rained. Gobshites😀

They go to Spain and complain they speak SpanishGrin

Phuquocdreams · 27/10/2019 21:40

Math, just to point out that Dublin Bay is in fact a UNESCO designated biosphere (I think first of all it was Bull Island and has since been extended to the whole bay). Not something that every capital city can claim...

RowenaMud · 27/10/2019 21:56

I think the Irish sometimes have an arrogant over inflated view of Dublin!

A more accurate statement is ‘Dubliners sometimes have an arrogant over inflated view of Dublin’ - something that is not shared by the rest of the country.

Avenilson · 27/10/2019 22:14

@mathanxiety But not because it wasn't sunny, or because Sterling is weak, or because it occurred to you when you were there that Ireland had a history and a perspective on UK history that was distinct from that of the UK and you thought Dublin owed you an explanation

And because that's all pure history now @jennymanara, northern conflict; time to be resigned and explained to the 'observers' in a museum from the Irish perspective, because it's all sorted. I trust you are aware of Brexit and I believe you have absolutely no idea why Ireland is the sticking point.

RueCambon · 27/10/2019 22:21

I don't have an ''over inflated view'' of Dublin but it's not dirty, dangerous, ordinary or dull and the people aren't rude and unfriendly and there isn't nothing to do etc.. It's coming in for a lot of stick on this thread which is unfair as it can rain anywhere. And the UK is hardly a place that doesn't have rain. People are hardly friendliER in the UK. There is not LESS crime in London. I have lived in Dublin and London and Dublin is not the west of Ireland, it doesn't rain any more in Dublin than it does in large parts of the UK but tbh I think English people like to label Dublin as rainier than the UK.

If this was a thread about how shit Cardiff was, it'd have been taken down by now.

Potnoodledoo · 27/10/2019 22:36

I dont have an over inflated view of Dublin.I know it has problems.
But rain isnt one of them.Britain and Ireland have basically the same weather.

But of course gloss over the fact London especially has awful knife crime. But Dublin with its rain and unfriendly locals is so much worse.

Trewser · 27/10/2019 22:49

I couldn't give a shit about rain. It was unfriendly and dull.

Blowandgo · 27/10/2019 23:13

Well then my dear I suspect you went to either the wrong part or came with the wrong people.

MoltonSilver · 27/10/2019 23:20

I made a few comments a few days ago but ffs this thread has gone utterly ridiculous. You could pick any city and take sides. Do you not have enough of the taking sides shite with brexit. Move on.

northernstars · 27/10/2019 23:23

@Blowandgo we must be near neighbours!

mathanxiety · 28/10/2019 03:29

@Phuquocdreams you are right! It now encompasses the whole bay from Dun Laoghaire to Portmarnock, not just the North Bull Island.

There is nothing as quietly dramatic as the sound of thousands and thousands of geese miles overhead all calling to each other as they follow the ancient route to their winter quarters.

Bring your binoculars when you come to Dublin, folks.

OT slightly, just found out that Sinead O Connor played in Vicar Street Dublin
last night. Gutted!! I would have popped across if i’d Known. Nothing like seeing her perform in her home town. Great to see she’s performing again.

Blowandgo · 28/10/2019 08:02

@northernstars tiny world Grin Waiting on the boys to wake up to go for a beach walk with the dogs, its an amazing morning out there - once you are dressed for it like!

Did not realise she was gigging again. Poor woman, I feel so much sympathy for all she has been through so glad to hear she is doing what she loves.

ClinkyMonkey · 28/10/2019 08:02

I always find it amusing when 'the friendly people' are cited as a reason to visit somewhere. It is said about Belfast (my home 'town') all the time. We're the same mix as anywhere else. Grumpy oul' bastards (me!) mingling with more pleasant and cheery folks. Perhaps the latter are naturally suited to industries where they are dealing with the public, hence the reputation.

ExecutiveFiat · 28/10/2019 08:34

Enjoy your walk Blow. I’ve seen SOC live three times. She’s an amazing performer.
My DD is heading to Dublin for a couple of nights soon. . She loves having her Irish passport, especially in the wake if Brexit. No end of free movement for her😀

merrygoround51 · 28/10/2019 08:43

I live in Dublin and love Dublin. It’s no Paris or Rome , Amsterdam or London . It’s small and lacks the showstopper sights but it is a nice city break destination.

It’s probably better to compare it to a Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow or Edinburgh and see how it stacks up

ExecutiveFiat · 28/10/2019 08:52

Agreed Merry (although dislike Paris, prefer other French cities. I like London a lot, but it doesn’t compare in any way to New York. It’s all relative.

ExecutiveFiat · 28/10/2019 08:57

This thread has made me want to book a city break .Smile Belfast is a great city, and has some cheap flights at the moment..

Blowandgo · 28/10/2019 09:39

We did Belfast earlier in the year, wanted to do it in case breshit ever goes ahead although insurance companies down this end have already given green cards to drive up there!
Obviously no need to do dublin as we are already here lol but love Edinburghfor a city break. Never get tired of the place!

ExecutiveFiat · 28/10/2019 10:04

Love Edinburgh as well. Glasgow is also fab.

Sakura7 · 28/10/2019 11:48

I'm from your neck of the woods too Blow. Never appreciated how lovely it was as a kid but it was such a great place to grow up - two beaches, parks, a fairground (now pretty much defunct though). We used to have so many people from the city come out during the summer and the kids were always jealous of what we had (and we were jealous of them being in town). Back then we used to go swimming in the sea all the time in summer.

I don't live there anymore but I'm hoping to persuade DP to move there in the next few years.

northernstars · 28/10/2019 13:34

@Blowandgo we'd be out most days. We did Ardgillan yesterday. Today we have attempted IKEA - couldn't even get parked so given up.
@Sakura7 best decision we ever made moving here

WhatchaMaCalllit · 31/10/2019 08:21

Just to report -

It is raining today in Dublin.

That is all.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 31/10/2019 08:32

@WhatchaMaCallit 😂

I spent yesterday morning in Dublin. I came up with my friend to the a-ha gig the night before (they were amazing!). I enjoyed a saunter around Trinity College and Grafton Street. It was a lovely day. Fresh, bright and breezy.
