Tonsils Out As Adult

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has had their tonsils taken out as an adult? I suffer from tonsillitis quite frequently and the last time it developed to quincy. I've had this twice now and had to be admitted both times. Anyway, I was advised to get them taken out the second time I had quincy but I had a 3 month old and a 3 year old at the time so it wasn't really an option.
Has anyone here has them removed as an adult? Did you have to stay overnight? How long did it take to recover?
Thanks

My husband, he was readmitted 3 times and had to go back into theatre as he kept bleeding profusely. Lost 19lb in 2 weeks. However, he has been well for over a year and doesn’t regret it. His tonsils were enormous which didn’t help.

10 years ago at 34. Awful op, horrendous recovery , don’t regret it for a second. I’d never felt “well” and had never been able to breathe through my nose. Apparently had adenoids as well even though I should have been too old. Just make sure you’ve got help afterwards. Assume the worst recovery wise but these past 10 years have been totally worth it.

At 19 - should have been done years earlier...consultant was thoroughly horrified at the mess my throat was in.

Recovery was dreadful..major infection afterwards resulted in haemorrhage, needed readmitting and transfusion / IV antibiotics.

Spent years before op severely run-down with other throat / chest / urinary infections which were more or less constant....rarely been ill since, would and do recommend tonsilectomy to anyone.

Dn had this in August, no problems healing at all.

She drinks a lot of water though and is only 25. She had to eat dry toast or biscuits in the recovery bay and was out the same day.

Adult tonsils are difficult to remove as tonsils are quite hard by then and may need to be cut off and removed. Recovery usually takes 7 to 10 days and you will need to take regular pain killers even if you don’t have any pain. To avoid post op complications do salt and water gargles and hopefully you will recover fast. Good luck

Thanks for responding even if some of the posts are a bit scary! Shock

Not what you are asking I know but my 6 year old had them done 5 weeks ago, he was told 2 wks off school. The first week he was absolutely crying in agony despite regular paracetamol and ibuprofen and the difflam spray. Then one day he woke up with no pain! He went back to school after 10 days. I can't believe how well he recovered. His throat looked awful before and its perfect now. Definitely have it done op!

TessoftheDobermans · 20/10/2019 20:15

Had mine done at age 25. The op itself was straightforward, no problems at all other than being pretty tired for a week or so after.

Only downside was that, while DCs were small & bringing infections home from school, I continued to get throat infections - only they became laryngitis instead of tonsillitis. But I wasn't half so ill with them as I had been with tonsillitis, I'd just lose my voice for a few days and feel a bit under the weather.

Definitely the right thing to do in my case.

Early 20s. Don't regret it for a moment but holy fuck it was painful and I wasn't really prepared for it.

user1493242132 · 20/10/2019 20:19

Did mine, DD3, DS just under 1. Had the op early morning and got discharged at around 3pm. Was home for bath time. I didn’t react too well with the pain killers they gave me though. Slept for hours and hours for about a week. I had my mum stay with me and a nanny so that was helpful. At least the children got to see me. The pain subsides in about 2 weeks.

LuckyAmy1986 · 20/10/2019 20:26

Had it done in 20s, recovery was bad!! Way worse than I expected but my god how amazing it is knowing I’ll never get tonsillitis again! So worth it Grin

BeBraveAndBeKind · 20/10/2019 20:30

I had mine removed when I was 30 and the DCs were toddlers. Incredibly painful afterwards but totally worth it. I was waking up every single day with a sore throat and getting tonsillitis every other month.

Name7 · 20/10/2019 20:31

It’s a horrid journey to go through but soooo worth it! I was getting so ill each time. Don’t have pethidine for the pain. Doesn’t work!

Roselilly36 · 20/10/2019 20:35

I had my tonsils removed when I was nearly thirty, I was told that the surgery may be complicated, blood loss etc. I took Arnica, to help the bruising and blood loss, the surgery was very straightforward. Try not to worry, it’s surgery well worth having.

hels71 · 20/10/2019 20:54

Has mine out late 20s. Was really quite unwell for 8 weeks afterwards and not fully recovered for a year. However do glad I did it as mine were horrendous and making me very poorly. Was kept in overnight.

student26 · 20/10/2019 21:00

It’s painful, not going to lie. Best advice is to take the medicine, even when you don’t think you need it. I was clock watching constantly for my painkillers. It hurt. But by day ten pain just disappeared completely! Horrible one minute, gone the next. Good luck!

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 20/10/2019 21:00

Still scary stories but I appreciate everyone's honesty. It definitely makes sense to get them out. I would much rather laryngitis!
Thanks all Smile

Had mine out at 24 after about 15 years of chronic tonsillitis.
Recovery was horrible, couldn't eat, excruciating earache and woke up one morning choking on my own blood (sorry, gross I know). I got some horrible post operative infection, taken back into hospital where I was given IV antibiotics. That said, once the infection had cleared, I felt absolutely fine and I have done ever since. As hideous as it was at the time, I'm so glad I had it done. No more feeling like I'm swallowing razor blades every few weeks!

Corsodyl afterwards was a godsend. And I agree with the staying on top of pain relief. I had alarms set and through the night. Made it more bearable. Ask for dissolvable if you can. I may have been so bad because they were very infected and scarred when I had the op. It had to happen then though as I was struggling to breathe.
