Does anyone live in Ulverston?

What’s it like? Is it a good place to bring children up? Any ‘rough’ areas?

Thanks!

I don’t live in Ulverston but we’ve spent every New Year up there for the past four years, either in Loppergarth or Mascalles.

We really like it, lots of nice cafes, pubs and places to eat, and we love the beach!

Not really useful to you I know as we only have a five day snap shot of the place! Blush

Thanks! Your new year sounds nice 😀

I haven't been for years, but I got the impression the whole place was rather run down.
Hopefully it is on the up.

The tourists clog up the roads in the summer and the train service is rubbish.

Don't know specifics though!

I live in Ulverston, have done for nearly a decade. It’s a bit boring, but very safe, so great for bringing kids up in that respect. Good Primary schools, and the Secondary school is OK too. Very friendly, lots of people who weren’t born here so you’re not made to feel like an outsider.
The honeypot is rough in terms of Ulverston, but not if you’re used to rough areas in a big city.

lakeswimmer · 19/10/2019 22:14

I don't but I know quite a lot of people who do including people with young children and I'd think it would be a good place to bring up a family. DH and I considered moving there when our DC were younger as housing is cheaper than surrounding areas. I'm not aware that there are any bits to avoid but like most places some streets are nicer than others.

It seems like there's good community spirit and some lovely independent shops.

Itsfineactually · 19/10/2019 22:19

Yeah the houses are cheaper than Kendal! I think we’d prefer Kendal.

Kendal is a bit of a funny town I think, not very friendly, a bit more going on that Ulverston obviously but if that’s what you’re bothered about I go for Lancaster. Where do you need to be near for work?

RandomMess · 19/10/2019 22:23

I was going to ask about commute too as they aren't particularly fast roads to drive around on.

RubbingHimSourly · 19/10/2019 22:36

Ulverston is lovely.

Loads of festivals and not touristy enough to be bogged down like the poor sods who live in the lakes........there's a lovely beach at the manjushri centre (( Buddhist temple thing )) .........I find it a lot more authentic less tacky than the lakes lakes........although I am saddened to see that in recent years due to Facebook etc things such as the Dickensian festival, lantern parade etc have become swamped.......although we do manage to keep some things a bit more under wraps.

It has all you need and more, there's an art deco cinema (( which still has an interval and they'll pause the film a bit longer so my tea can brew properly )) and things on at ford park alone constantly. We'll be heading there over Halloween for the candle light walk........for housing I'd look at the croftlands area depending on your budget (( top of yon hill ))

I don't know why posters are saying transport is poor, trains run frequently towards Manchester which is around 1hr 30 mins or so away. Confused

RubbingHimSourly · 19/10/2019 22:41

It's fine you'd be surprised. There's a lot more going on in Ulverston than Kendal. It's a festival town. People come from allover the UK for the Dickensian (( sadly )) I'd go for Ulverston over Kendal personally........I find Kendal a bit of an odd place.

Have a look at the choose Ulverston page to get an idea of what's going on locally.

@RubbingHimSourly

Train thing is really more about the ongoing issues with Northern 🤬 and the last train home from Manchester is depressingly early, probably more relevant if you are used to being able to train home late evening or have a houseful of concert attending teens.

helpmum2003 · 19/10/2019 22:53

If access to Manchester is important I personally wouldn't go further north than Lancaster. Even when the trains are running ok it's not a quick journey and often crowded.

RubbingHimSourly · 19/10/2019 23:02

The last train home is around 9pm....... The journey from Kendal is a bit more difficult using a mixture of trains and buses. TBH as someone who doesn't drive I find the trains ok. Midweek they're pretty quiet. The last train on a weekend can be a bit lairy but absolutely nothing compared to York / Newcastle etc where I had my innocent, Cumbrian eyes well and truly opened a few weeks ago. Grin

Lancaster may be a better option for the op if she's wanting easy travel into Manchester etc.

Itsfineactually · 19/10/2019 23:15

Thanks for the link @Rubbing

Commute wise, I have a new job in Grange over Sands and my DH will be commuting on the train to Edinburgh. I’d be dropping him off in oxenholme, but it’s only fortnightly.

RubbingHimSourly · 19/10/2019 23:19

Oh you're very near to Grange.

I'd weigh it up........if you're into pottering, walking, nice family events and good food then it's definitely worth serious thought.

It's a much slower pace of life but it's one that's worth having a go at.

Trumpton · 20/10/2019 01:17

I was there 2 years ago as part of a Morris festival.
Lovely place . I was very impressed by one pub that had a sign up “ our toilets are for everyone’s use not just our patrons “
And another pub , when we were dithering about how much food to order , offered to serve one meal on two plates for us ....we both had enough food !

It struck me as a gentle and friendly place .

adaline · 20/10/2019 07:01

I'd rather live in Ulverston than Kendal. Kendal high street is really not a nice place and it has a bit of a gloomy atmosphere about it.

Ulverston is lovely and you're much closer to the beach. It's not far from Ambleside and the national park either Smile
